The 22-year-old was forced to miss the final pre-season friendly at Dundee United after sustaining a hamstring injury in training.

Hughton told the club's official website: "I must stress it is only a minor problem. We're very hopeful he'll be back for Reading a week on Saturday.

"It was touch and go and we maybe could have pushed him but decided it was best not to risk him."

Midfielder Nicky Butt will also sit out with a hand injury as the Magpies begin life in the Championship with a tricky test.

With Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins leaving St James' Park this summer, Geordie Andy Carroll, who has impressed in pre-season, should start in attack.

Kick-off in the Black Country is at 5.30pm.
