Former Barnsley man Howard was forced off during the 1-1 draw with Leicester on Tuesday night after coming down with tonsillitis.

"We don't know when it came on but what we do know is that the lad has got no energy because of it and is very lethargic," said Blackwell.

However, fellow midfielder Lee Hendrie is available once again after serving a four-match ban for his dismissal after the whistle during the play-off final defeat to Burnley at the end of last season.

Defender Derek Geary is facing a battle to save his career as he is struggling to recover from a long-term knee injury.
