Varney pushing for Wednesday start

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine may hand Luke Varney a start in Saturday's Championship clash with Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough.

Varney recently returned to the club on loan until the end of the season and, after starting the last two games on the substitutes' bench, he could be thrust into the starting line-up after Owls lost at Scunthorpe in midweek.

Francis Jeffers is in contention following a hamstring injury and another striker, Akpo Sodje, is in the shake-up as Irvine searches for a cutting edge.

Jermaine Johnson will be out for at least another four weeks due to his hamstring injury while Tommy Miller is also struggling with a similar problem.

Miller has had an injection to aid his recovery and could return to contention next week.
