The striker controlled a low cross from Therry Racon before faking his first shot and burying the second in the right corner in the 60th minute.

Charlton went in front when Alan Julian was at fault in the Gillingham goal to allow Frazer Richardson's low 30-yard shot to squirm underneath him and into the left corner in the 31st minute.

Gillingham were level two minutes later when Andy Barcham raced through the centre and hit a superb strike on the half-volley from the edge of the box which left Rob Elliot with no chance as it flew into the right corner.

It was then Elliot's turn in the Charlton goal to make a mistake when he fumbled a weak shot straight at him from Rene Howe into the path of Dennis Oli who scored a tap-in from five yards just before half-time, but Mooney's strike earned Charlton a deserved draw.
