Ricardo Fuller's striker just before the hour looked like handing the Premier League side victory, but substitute Mendy's acrobatic effort from close range moments after his introduction salvaged a draw for the Rams.

Liam Lawrence put Stoke ahead after nine minutes before Stephen Pearson restored parity at the start of the second half.

Defenders Dean Leacock and Shaun Barker, midfielder Lee Croft and strikers Chris Porter and Rob Hulse all missed out through injury for Derby.

Boss Nigel Clough will hope his injury problems ease in the remaining week before the Championship opener at home to newly-promoted Peterborough.
