Abdoulaye Faye opened the scoring when he headed home from a corner after two minutes and Dave Kitson added a second from the penalty spot following an obstruction on Dean Whitehead just after the half-hour mark.

But second-half goals from Borja (52) and Alberto Bueno (71) denied the Potters victory.

Borja's strike flew into the top right-hand corner of Thomas Sorensen's net, while for Valladolid's second, Danny Pugh could only clear to Bueno who scored from close range.
