The former Nottingham Forest forward came off the bench to earn the Rams a deserved win with what appeared to be a cross that deceived Russell Hoult with 12 minutes remaining.

Steve Davies, playing as a lone striker, continued his impressive form to cancel out a Jay McEveley own goal and Davies missed a penalty before Robbie Savage's cross looped into the net to give Derby a half-time lead.

Luke Rodgers levelled for the Magpies midway through the second half, but Nigel Clough's side continued to probe and were rewarded when Commons struck the winner.
