Newcastle manager Chris Hughton hopes Jose Enrique will be fit to play a part in Monday night's clash with Nottingham Forest at St James' Park.

The 24-year-old Spaniard has been struggling with a hamstring injury and was kept on the substitutes' bench for the midweek win at Doncaster.

Peter Lovenkrands and Alan Smith (both ankle) missed the hard-fought win at the Keepmoat Stadium, but could be back in contention, as could Mike Williamson (broken hand) and Fitz Hall (hamstring), who also sat it out in midweek.

Midfielder Joey Barton, sidelined for more than five months following surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot, stepped off the bench at Doncaster and will be looking to improve his match fitness, while Shola Ameobi (hamstring) and Steven Taylor (knee/broken jaw) both remain sidelined.
