David Clarkson fired the Championship side ahead from close range in the 55th minute, but Lee Mansell drew the Gulls level eight minutes later when his 25-yard strike deflected in off the studs of Kalifa Cisse.

Ellis then popped up with the winner, the centre-half prodding home through a sea of legs after City had failed to deal with Kevin Nicholson's prodigious long throw.
