Jones: Hoping to feature against Cardiff

Scunthorpe boss Ian Baraclough will assess the fitness of defender Rob Jones ahead of the home clash with Cardiff.

The towering centre-back could be back in contention against the Bluebirds after missing the last four games with a broken bone in his hand.

David Mirfin has been ruled out for several weeks with a foot injury and Jones' return to contention would boost an Iron side that have won just once on home soil this season.

Mirfin is out for another month with a foot injury but winger Garry Thompson is expected to be available again after a recent groin injury.

Defender Jim McNulty is nursing an ankle injury and the visit of the promotion-chasing Bluebirds may come too soon.

Craig Bellamy is expected to return to Cardiff's starting line-up for their trip to Scunthorpe.

The forward, who has played out on the left wing for the Bluebirds this term, was rested for Wednesday's 1-1 draw at Reading as Dave Jones looks to use his services sparingly in order to see his niggling knee troubles reduced to a minimum.

His return means midfielder Stephen McPhail is likely to drop out of the XI, although whether Jones opts to make any alternative changes with City winless in two games remains to be seen.

Centre-back Gabor Gyepes (hamstring) and full-back Kevin McNaughton (ankle), as well as midfielder Danny Drinkwater, will be assessed as late as possible, although Jones is hopeful they will be available for the trip to Glanford Park.

Defenders Darcy Blake and Adam Matthews remain on standby having started at the Madejski Stadium in midweek.
