Hammond: Back in action for Saints

Peterborough could hand a debut to striker David Ball for the visit of promotion rivals Southampton.

Ball joined on transfer deadline day from Manchester City and will be in the squad against the Saints - though he will struggle to force his way into the starting XI.

Posh scored five in midweek against Sheffield Wednesday so manager Darren Ferguson will stick with the front three of George Boyd, Craig Mackail-Smith and Lee Tomlin.

Fellow new signing Paul Jones will again be on the bench as cover for number one goalkeeper Joe Lewis.

Defender Gabriel Zakuani is still three weeks away from a return after dislocating his shoulder while striker Dave Hibbert also remains on the sidelines.

Hibbert dislocated his knee back in November and is still not fit enough to return.

Southampton captain Dean Hammond should return to the starting line-up for the trip to Peterborough.

The midfielder proved his fitness following a calf injury with a second-half run-out as a substitute during Tuesday's 2-1 win at Exeter.

Winger Jonathan Forte, a deadline-day signing from Scunthorpe, will be added to the squad.

Brazilian striker Guly do Prado missed out in midweek with a slight knock and will be checked over.

Midfielder Adam Lallana has returned to training following a knee injury and could be on the bench, with manager Nigel Adkins wary of rushing him back too soon.

Striker David Connolly is also in light training after undergoing a hernia operation but needs to build up his fitness.
