The game burst to life midway through the first half when Dexter Blackstock gave Forest the lead from close range but it was quickly cancelled out by Lockwood.

Doncaster looked the most likely to grab a winner but were denied by Forest goalkeeper Lee Camp and then the crossbar during the closing stages.

Doncaster made a bright start and John Oster was the first to try his luck with a fierce strike from just outside the area which flew well over.

James Coppinger was the next to threaten and smartly turned away from Paul McKenna before his deflected shot went wide for a corner which came to nothing, before Wes Morgan got an important block in to keep out James Hayter's volley as the ball bounced around in the Forest area.

The visitors created their first decent opening in the 25th minute when Neil Sullivan produced a superb low save to keep out Lewis McGugan's shot which looked destined for the bottom corner after a well-worked corner.

Forest forced another corner three minutes later and this time they made it count. McKenna's set-piece went to the far post where it was nodded down by Paul Anderson and Blackstock blasted home from point-blank range for his fourth goal of the season.

The lead lasted just five minutes, though, as Rovers grabbed a quick equaliser. Chris Gunter fouled Hayter down the left and Oster whipped in the free-kick quickly, with Lockwood given the space at the far post to beat Camp with a header for his first goal since scoring against Cardiff in August 2009.

Forest could have restored their advantage shortly before the break when a quick break ended with a McGugan shot which Sullivan did well to turn round the post.

Chances were few and far between at the start of the second half until some neat football from Rovers saw Billy Sharp set up Hayter who shot wide, while Sharp was also denied by the legs of Camp.

The keeper then produced another superb save to prevent Rovers going in front, somehow using his legs again to keep out Hayter's header from a Woods free-kick.

The home side went even closer in the 86th minute as the battling Hayter teed up substitute Mark Wilson but his volley crashed back off the crossbar - and Sharp then wasted a glorious chance with the last action of the match as he headed wide from James O'Connor's cross.
