Cole: Watches on from the sidelines

With new signing Joe Cole looking on from the sidelines, a youthful Reds side created little in the way of clear scoring opportunities, with Alberto Aquilani's free-kick palmed away by Ivan Benito in their best effort while striker David Ngog wasted two good chances.

At the other end, Nzuzi Bundebele Toko was denied by a combination of Diego Cavalieri and Stephen Darby - though Toko also went closest to a goal for Liverpool, Benito sparing him the indignity of an own goal.
