Rio Ferdinand will miss the trip as Sir Alex Ferguson places his trust in Chris Smalling to partner Nemanja Vidic in central defence.

Victory will put Ferguson's men within touching distance of a place in the last 16.

However in addition to Ferdinand, who is being rested, Jonny Evans, Federico Macheda, Darron Gibson and Anderson are all missing with a virus, with Wayne Rooney (ankle) and Michael Owen (hamstring) also out.

Ryan Giggs (hamstring) also misses out but could be fit for next week's Manchester derby at Eastlands.

United (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Amos, Rafael, Brown, O'Shea, Vidic, Smalling, Evra, Fabio, Nani, Scholes, Fletcher, Carrick, Eikrem, Obertan, Park, Bebe, Berbatov, Hernandez.
