Thirlwell: Could start for Cumbrians

Carlisle defender Lubo Michalik and striker Mike Grella are expected to return to the squad for the northern area semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday.

Michalik could go straight back into the starting line-up for the northern area semi-final following suspension as fellow centre-half Peter Murphy remains sidelined due to a back injury.

Striker Grella, also on loan from Leeds, was not given permission to play by his parent club at the weekend.

Defenders Miguel Comminges and Ashley Eastham were drafted in on loan from Cardiff and Blackpool respectively in time to make their debuts in Saturday's FA Cup win over Tamworth, so manager Greg Abbott must decide whether to tinker with his defensive line-up.

Midfielder Paul Thirlwell stepped off the substitutes' bench on Saturday and is pushing for a return to the starting line-up.

Giles Coke is hoping to return to the Owls' starting line-up at Carlisle.

Coke returned to the substitutes' bench, appearing for the final 20 minutes in Saturday's FA Cup win over Northampton and showed no reaction after recently struggling with a knee injury.

But although manager Alan Irvine has no new injury or suspension problems, he will be without defensive pair Jon Otsemobor (calf) and Lewis Buxton (hamstring) again.

Wednesday have scored 21 goals in their last six games in all competitions and Irvine is unlikely to make too many changes, but winger Jermaine Johnson is another who pushing for a recall to the starting line-up.

The Owls have overcome Notts County, Chesterfield on penalties and Hartlepool in previous rounds in the competition.
