Austin: Faces late test

Austin: Faces late test

Burnley boss Eddie Howe will check on the fitness of striker Charlie Austin ahead of the game.

The recent signing from Swindon missed Saturday's 3-1 victory at Watford because he was feeling unwell and was replaced in the starting line-up by Chris Iwelumo.

Iwelumo was on the scoresheet at Vicarage Road and Howe will be reluctant to make any changes for the clash with Dave Jones' side.

Clarets striker Martin Paterson could be out for the rest of the season following the recurrence of a thigh injury in the recent defeat at Doncaster.

Midfielder Chris McCann also remains sidelined for another fortnight after undergoing minor head surgery.

The 23-year-old Dubliner, who had been complaining of repeated migraines, has been released from hospital following the procedure.

Peter Whittingham is likely to be available for Cardiff.

The midfielder missed Saturday's 1-0 victory over Scunthorpe with a dead leg but is set to return to the fold for what is City's game in hand over the majority of their promotion rivals.

Boss Dave Jones does not have any new injury concerns but may well rotate one or two to keep his side fresh for a demanding forthcoming schedule.

City's players reported for duty on Sunday with everyone okay barring the usual knocks and bruises, but that does not mean Jones will refrain from making changes.

Craig Bellamy is most likely to make way as the club continue to manage his long-standing knee injury effectively, with one eye on Saturday's massive clash at in-form promotion contenders Nottingham Forest.

All three substitutes against Scunthorpe - Chris Burke, Jason Koumas and Jon Parkin - played a positive role in securing the last-gasp triumph and may well have played themselves into contention.
