The 19-year-old's volley from the edge of the area, which is a goal of the season contender, bounced in off the underside of the crossbar after 51 minutes.

Richie Foran broke the deadlock on 40 minutes when his angled header from six yards went in off the post.

Caley Thistle top scorer Adam Rooney returned to the Inverness starting line-up after being Saturday's supersub goalscorer in the 1-0 win against St Mirren.

Midfielder Lee Cox replaced Russell Duncan, who was sent off last time out.

Ross, Shane Sutherland and Chris Hogg also come in for the Highlanders with Eric Odhiambo, Gavin Morrison, Alex MacDonald and Aaron Doran dropping to the bench.

Hibs made three changes to the side which lost 1-0 to Hamilton on Saturday, with Richie Towell and Scott Taggart in.

Francis Dickoh was ruled out after being shown red at the weekend, while Akpo Sodje dropped to the bench.

Portuguese striker Ricardo Vaz Te flashed the first chance wide for Hibs after nine minutes.

The former Bolton forward directed a header off target when he connected with a Taggart free-kick after being fouled by Kenny Gillet.

Grant Munro powered a header straight down the throat of Hibs keeper Jakub Divis mid-way through the half.

The game's first on-target effort stemmed from a Sutherland free-kick.

Vaz Te squandered his third opportunity of the game on the half hour when he nodded a Taggart cross wide.

Moments later forward David Wotherspoon hammered over from 12 yards after being played through by midfielder Liam Miller.

Caley Thistle manager Terry Butcher left his seat in the stand to enter the technical area after 35 minutes to shout encouragement at his team - action which was cheered by the home fans.

His influence led to the opening goal in 40 minutes when Foran connected with a deep Ross Tokely cross.

The Irishman's angled header from six yards struck the post before rolling along the line and strike partner Rooney made sure it crossed.

Ross volleyed home Caley Thistle's second from the edge of the box in six minutes after the break.

The teenager's first goal of the campaign was the sweetest of strikes as it hit the crossbar before bouncing over the line.

On his 50th appearance for Inverness, the midfielder's effort came after a deep cross from Rooney.

Hibs might have reduced arrears moments later when Vaz Te found Wotherspoon but he blasted over from just inside the area.

The visitors were slightly closer with Richie Towell's effort but the low angled 20-yard shot failed to trouble the hosts' Northern Ireland international keeper Jonny Tuffey.

Vaz Te was next to fire wide for the Edinburgh club when he met a short free-kick from Miller.

Divis saved well from a low Rooney strike just after the hour following a through ball from Sutherland.

Foran and Ross then missed chances to extend Caley Thistle's lead.

Hibs attempted to get back into the game with a trio of substitions, but to no avail.

Sutherland might have increased the hosts' advantage in the closing stages but he fired wide before having another chance saved by Divis.

Sixteen-year-old midfielder Liam Polworth came on the last minute for Inverness to make his SPL debut.
