In the 35th minute Alan Sheehan's poor pass led to Ricky Ravenhill being muscled off the ball by Hayes who played in Scott Wagstaff, and the young Addicks winger knocked the ball past Stuart Nelson and finished neatly from a tight angle.

Ten minutes later Jeff Hughes' loose pass sent Bradley Wright-Phillips through and his square ball left Hayes with a simple finish for his first Charlton goal.

Sheehan made amends early in the second half with a goal-line clearance to deny Hayes, and on the hour-mark his corner hung in the air long enough for Colombian teenager Cristiano Montano - making his league debut as a half-time substitute - to fire past Rob Elliot.

Lee Hughes was denied by an offside flag late on as Charlton held out.
