Paterson, 19, stepped off the bench in Saturday's League Two clash at the Galpharm to cancel out Lee Novak's 10th goal of the season, while Huddersfield had enough chances to have had the game won by half-time and the draw helped them extend their record-breaking unbeaten run.

They have now equalled Nottingham Forest's 42-match Football League record set in the late 1970s.

Jordan Rhodes, who had scored 14 goals in seven matches for club and country, was twice denied by goalkeeper David Grof in the first half and missed another good chance before the break.

Walsall defended well, but Town finally broke through in the 67th minute. Gary Roberts played a short corner to Scott Arfield, who returned the ball to Roberts and his cross was slotted home by Novak from close range.

Paterson, who came on 10 minutes into the second half, looked lively and deservedly grabbed the 78th-minute equaliser when he collected a pass from Mat Sadler and broke away, firing home a superb curling shot from just inside the 18-yard box.
