Nicky Maynard's third goal in three games and a header from Marvin Elliott put the Championship club firmly in control at the break, with manager Keith Millen naming a strong squad for the friendly.

Jeff Goulding pulled one back for the Robins in the second half, making up for his earlier profligacy to send David James the wrong way from the penalty spot after Keith Lowe had been upended by Louis Carey.

But it was not enough as City held out for victory.
