Eddie Howe's Clarets dominated the first half and went in at the break 3-0 up thanks to goals from Alex MacDonald, Chris Eagles and Martin Paterson.

But Blue Square Bet North side Altrincham hit back after the restart with two free headers from Nick Chadwick in as many minutes hauling his side back into the match.

But Burnley striker Chris Iwelumo restored the visitors' two-goal lead in the 67th minute when he added a fourth from Wade Elliott's cross.
