And it was one of the newbies that put them ahead when former Leeds and West Ham midfielder Lee Bowyer struck home on the stroke of half-time.
But Stephen Hunt levelled on 75 minutes and Mick McCarthy's men sealed the win from the spot as Sylvan Ebanks-Blake converted from 12 yards with seven minutes remaining.
