Farid El Alagui finally ended the stalemate with two minutes to go, powering home a close-range header from Harry Forrester's precision cross from the corner flag.

Earlier Brentford had dominated for long spells but lacked a cutting edge in the box with El Alagui, Clayton Donaldson and Norwich loanee Tom Adeyemi all missing clear-cut openings.

Colchester always looked a danger on the break, but Ian Henderson's blistering drive was blocked at point-blank range by keeper Simon Moore.

The striker also slid an effort off target and Tom Eastman nodded wide at the far post when it looked easier to score just before the break.
