Hurst: Back in contention

Kevan Hurst should be available for Southend's clash at home to neighbours Dagenham, while Dave Martin will be assessed.

Winger Hurst returned to training on Thursday having missed Tuesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy win over AFC Wimbledon having not fully recovered from a bout of concussion sustained last weekend.

Fellow wide man Martin faces a fitness test having missed out of late with an ankle problem.

Striker Freddy Eastwood is also pushing for involvement having returned to training after a calf injury.

Goalkeeper Paul Smith finally made his debut for the club in midweek and it remains to be seen whether manager Paul Sturrock retains his services or recalls Cameron Belford.

The Shrimpers will be looking to build on last weekend's 1-0 win over Wycombe - their first in the league this season.

Dagenham boast an unchanged squad.

Manager John Still has no new injuries for the showdown, with only Kevin Maher (foot) and Matt Saunders (ankle) sidelined as they continue to build up their match fitness.

Mickey Spillane played in Tuesday's superb Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory over Stevenage with a bandage around his head having required four stitches to a wound picked up in last weekend's draw at AFC Wimbledon.

The versatile Spillane is again set to feature at Roots Hall, while fit-again Dominic Green is also pushing to start having appeared off the bench in the last two games.

Still faces a dilemma in attack with both Brian Woodall and Josh Scott on the scoresheet in midweek having replaced rested duo Sam Williams and Dwight Gayle.
