FT: West Ham 4 Southampton 1

It is all over at Upton Park, after a poor first half early goals for West Ham gave the game a totally different aspect after the break, leaving Southampton with much to ponder. Thanks for looking in.

A half-hearted Saints attack breaks down, and West Ham win it back.

West Ham still pressing - Jarvis forces a corner, but the Hammers are content to play it around until Nolan nods the ball wide.

West Ham play keep-ball to mass approval from the home fans. Matt Jarvis is called offside unluckily - that was a chance for 5-1.

Four minutes will be added on - four too many for Saints fans.

Ward-Prowse replaces Davis for Southampton.

Happy days for the Hammers but problems galore for Southampton, who have looked a different side at the back after the break.

The substitute muscles his way through three yellow shirts, then curls a lovely left-footed shot past Boruc from the edge of the box.

GOAL for West Ham! Maiga!

Half chance for Southampton, Collins clears a cross from near his own line and Mayuka's follow-up shot is cleared away.

West Ham can make nothing of it, Southampton break and Reid gets into a mix-up with Jaaskelainen as he retreats. The pair have a bit of an argument - it's as well they are 3-1 up.

Jarvis forces a corner, the Southampton keeper cannot prevent a deflection looping out of play off a defender.

That is Andy Carroll's last act of the game, he comes off to a standing ovation and is replaced by Maiga. The England striker had few chances but made his presence felt.

Schneiderlin barges into Carroll, who hits the deck heavily, and goes into the referee's book.

Lambert is caught offside as the ball loops over the top of McCartney into the box.

Noble slams his low free kick from just outside the area into the wall, no hat-trick for the midfielder just yet.

Hooiveld booked for catching Carroll, who has been appealing for the referee to punish the Dutchman for his close attentions for most of the afternoon.

Yoshida bears down on Jaaskelainen, but the West Ham keeper keeps his eye on the ball to collect with ease.

Southampton's heads have dropped following that penalty, West Ham looking comfortable.

Talk about a game of two halves! That trusted cliche has been out in force this afternoon in east London.

Mark Noble scores from the spot, sending Jaaskelainen the wrong way and tucking the ball away into the right corner.

Fonte handles in the area while challenging Carroll. Noble steps up...

Penalty to West Ham!

It has been all Southampton since they scored, and Ricky Lambert has a half-chance, nodding a Clyne cross a few yards wide after geting the better of Collins in the air.

Diame is off for West Ham, and Gary O'Neil is on.

Ricky Lambert's free kick is a yard too high, but Jaaskelainen was rooted to the spot - a touch lower and Saints would have been level.

Lallana wins a free kick on the edge of the box after being caught by Reid, who may still be jet-lagged after his round trip to New Zealand this week.

Rodriguez and Puncheon are off, Lambert and Mayuka are on for Southampton.

Rodriguez fed Lallana from the left, he found a yard of space and slammed the ball high beyond Jaaskeklainen from 12 yards out - great finish. Game on!

Yoshida feeds Puncheon, but his weak left-footed shot from outside the area is blocked and West Ham ease the pressure.

Lambert is warming up for Southampton, the south coast side need his goals now.

Yoshida is getting forward more than earlier. but once again there is a lack of quality in the final ball and West Ham's goal is not threatened.

Yoshida has a chance to shoot on the edge of the area, but dallies too long and Diame is in to block the shot when it eventually comes in.

Rodriguez is caught just offside as davis feeds the ball through to him on the edge of West Ham's box.

Benayoun times a tackle perfectly to slam the ball out from under Yoshida's feet into touch.

Guly tries to do something about it, chipping the ball over from the left but it has too much on it and Jaaskelainen watches the ball go out of play.

All Southampton's hard work in the first half has been undone in a few seconds of lax concentration - two very easy goals fro West Ham.

Collins has to be sharp under pressure from Guly, then Tomkins clears. What a start to the second half for the hosts.

Sloppy from Saints in midfield, Benayoun latched onto the ball, the ball was crossed from the right and Nolan tapped in from a yard out on the far post.

2-0 to West Ham! Kevin Nolan!

Mark Noble chipped a free kick into the area, Collins got in front iof the keeper and the ball nestled into the back of the net. No touch for Collins, it is Noble's goal, but a moment Boruc will want to forget.

GOAL for West Ham!

The second half is under way, neither side have made any changes.

Tomkins has come out to start the secind half, but is still shaking off that problem with his left knee.

Southampton are playing patiently and look happy to frustrate the home side, who have not been able to bring Carroll into the game so far. There's been a lack of real quality from both sides when in attack.

A few boos from the home fans as the whistle goes for the break.

Lallana has half a yard of space on the left, goes to ground in the area but the penalty claim is waved away. Half hearted at best.

Carroll appeals for handball against Hooiveld in the area, replays show it hit the Dutchman's chest.

Andy Carroll has been well shackled by Hooiveld so far, he is barely seeing the ball.

Puncheon feeds Lallana but he is just offside.

Yoshida tries a run down the left but runs out of pitch.

There's a lack of composure and quality in front of goal at both ends so far, chances few and far between.

West Ham get another on the opposite side after Collins tries a header, but Noble's effort dips onto the roof of the net.

Noble's free kick from near the corner flag is cleared, but the Hammers hit back to win a corner.

Jarvis is caught by Clyne after the ball had gone, and Tomkins is back on.

Play carries while Tomkins gets treatment off the pitch

Southampton see their free kick easily cleared, then Hooiveld barges into Diame to give one away in their own half.

Reid blocks Puncheon and gives away a free kick, but the Kiwi contests it with the referee.

A cross from Clyne loops high over Jaaskelainen's goal and out of play.

Southampton looking comfortable and not too anxious considering their lowly position in the table.

Rodriguez blasts a poor free kick from 25 yards high over the bar and into the Sir Bobby Moore Stand.

Puncheon gets hold iof the ball in midfield and chips it towards Rodriguez, but it is just too far ahead and Jaaskelainen collects.

Carroll essays a decent cross from the left but Hooiveld heads it away.

McCartney rushes forward to ensure that Rodriguez is caught offside.

Rodriguez chests down a Schneiderlin pass and flicks a volley past the post with Jaaskelainen scrambling to get across.

Boruc makes a confident claim to collect Noble's corner.

More pressure coming from the Hammers at the moment, and they force their first corner.

Schneiderlin pulls Nolan back and West Ham get a free kick, eventually Tomkins gets a header in on target but Hooiveld nods it away.

Diame robs Clyne in midfield to set up jarvis, but Schneiderlin does enough to snuff the attack out to concede a throw in.

Keep your thoughts on today's game coming in to me at tim_oscroft@hotmail.com.

"London Calling" is blasting out over the PA as we get ready for this clash between two of the teams to come up from the Championship last season.

If you fancy a flutter on today's game, our friends at Sky Bet tell us that it is 5/6 for a West Ham win, 3/1 for Southampton while the draw is 11/4. Head over to www.skybet.com for more offers on the action from Upton Park.

West Ham have scored 88% of their goals in the first half so far this term, so Artur Boruc can expect to be busy on his Saints debut. Saints have leaked 20 goals so far this season, and thrown away 11 potential points from winning positions.

More optimistic prediction here from Adam Rutland on the other side of the world: "The view from Jakarta, Indonesia, is that Saints will nick an end to end, mistake filled, game right at the death. Mayuka will come off the bench and use that pace of his to score a 92nd min winner!"

The last top-flight meeting between these two clubs at the Boleyn Ground was a 1-0 win for the Saints in December 2002. The winning goal came from James Beattie, last seen at Sheffield United last season.

Tom Pointin not feeling optinmistic: "Poor team out today from Adkins, can't stand Guly, should be playing Mayuka instead with some pace and energy in the team. We will miss Ramirez, I think Saints will unfortunately lose 2-1"

Goerge Bennett: "A draw will be a good result for the Saints today, Clyne's return will bring confidence to the defence & a one-one draw seems a realistic result to me."

Darragh O'Connor is Rosscommon, Ireland is feeling confident: "3-1 to the Hammers"

Dave Vasse questions Nigel Adkins' team selection: "Real dismay here at Upton Park. What does Adkins see in Guly?" Keep them coming in to me at tim_oscroft@hotmail.com. Dave will also have to contend with the Premier League's loudest PA system - ear plugs are advisable.

Polish keeper Artur Boruc makes his Southampton debut as Nigel Adkins looks to shore things up at the back.

Gabriel Sutton writes: "I'm already getting the impression it'll be the Saints home form to keep them in this league. Even though this isn't the sort of game Nigel Adkins will want to write off, I'm seeing a West Ham win - 2-0"

So, what do you make of your team's starting elevens? Let me know at tim_oscroft@hotmail.com.

For the visitors, Boruc, Clyne, Hooiveld and Guly come in to alter the team that drew last time out against Fulham.

Demel's thigh problem keeps him out for the hosts, who have had to make another change due to Vaz Te's dislocated shoulder - Yossi Benayoun comes in.

West Ham United: Jaaskelainen, Tomkins, Reid, Collins, McCartney, Noble, Nolan, Diame, Benayoun, Jarvis, Carroll. Subs: Spiegel, Chambers, Spence, O'Neil, Maiga, Cole, Hall.

Southampton: Boruc, Clyne, Fonte, Hooiveld, Yoshida, Schneiderlin, S. Davis, Lallana (c), Puncheon, Rodriguez, Guly. Subs: K. Davis (GK), Lambert, Ward-Prowse, Mayuka, Seaborne, Chaplow, Reeves.
