FT: Liverpool 1 Southampton 0

Liverpool get back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Southampton but it comes at a price as Suarez picks up a booking which will result in a suspension. After a dominant, although not inspiring, performance, Liverpool got the goal which proved to be the winner through Agger's 43rd minute header. Stay with us for all the post-match reaction.

90 + 4
FULL-TIME: LIVERPOOL 1 SOUTHAMPTON 0

90 + 3
Sterling breaks forward against two Southampton defenders. He is held up from Suarez's pass and then gives the ball away when attempting a reverse pass to Gerrard. Another wasted chance.

90 + 2
Carragher is booked after a clumsy challenge on Rodriguez, when he wrapped his boot around the waist of the Southampton forward.

90 + 1
Southampton's players look out on their feet. They are making a lot of mistakes after spending a lot of the game chasing the ball.

90
ADDED TIME: After Suarez shoots just wide, there will be a minimum of three minutes added time before the final whistle.

89
Lucas got a standing ovation when he went off but understandably looked very tired.

88
Lucas' return to the action ends. He had some good defensive moments but looked rusty on the ball. Carragher comes on in his place.

87
Liverpool's midfield is very far forward in these closing minutes. Rodgers does not appear concerned about a possible late sucker-punch.

86
Southampton break down the right but it comes to nothing. Liverpool counter-attack and Gazzaniga cannot gather. Yoshida has to be alert to clear the rebound when Suarez was lurking.

85
Liverpool remain on the attack but they have not posed a serious threat to Gazzaniga.

84
Good block from Agger after Lambert had a split-second view of the goal inside the penalty area.

83
Liverpool's set-pieces have again been poor today and another corner on the right is cleared at the near post.

82
Rodgers will have a big decision on what to do with his attacking options against West Ham.

81
Suarez is rightly booked for his handball and that is his fifth booking of the season. He will now miss the game against Southampton due to suspension. It was an instinctive handling off the ball from Suarez but was still foolish.

80
Enrique produces a brilliant pirouette to beat two Southampton players. Liverpool remain on the attack. Gerrard gets to the goalline and squares for Suarez but the ball deflects over the bar. From the replay it is clear Suarez handled the ball.

79
This has not been a classic game. Liverpool have done enough and nothing more. Southampton came set up to take a draw and have had no 'Plan B' so far in their search for an equaliser.

78
Puncheon is off and is replaced by Rodriguez.

77
Enrique's cross-shot is punched away by Gazzaniga but Liverpool remain on the attack. Johnson hits a left-foot, 20-yard effort wide of the target.

76
Liverpool break forward but Henderson, worrying about being offside, has to check his run and is then caught flatfooted from Sterling's pass inside the box.

75
Schneiderlin sends a free-kick into the Liverpool box but Lucas twice intercepts with the second header going back to Reina.

74
Liverpool do need a second goal. As comfortable as they have been, they will get twitchy towards the end. They could pay the price for not killing off Southampton. Without Suarez, there has been little spark.

73
Another corner to Liverpool as Suarez's quick feet force a tackle from substitute Davies. Skrtel heads wide of the far post at the corner.

72
Ramirez has been guilty of trying to go for the glory pass on too many occasions rather than trying to keep the ball.

71
Southampton hit a long ball towards Lallana but he stands no chance up against Johnson and Agger and the ball goes out for a goal-kick.

70
Rodgers clearly has no concerns over Lucas' fitness, having taken Allen off before the Brazilian. Southampton make a change. Cork is off and S. Davis comes on.

69
Suarez takes the corner and Gerrard shoots just wide at the near post. With the ball out of play, Henderson comes on in place of Allen.

68
Play is back under way. More nice skill from Suarez in trademark fashion at the byline. Enrique then drives forward from a Suarez shot and sees his shot deflect just wide for a corner.

67
There is a break in play as Ramirez receives treatment after taking a whack from Shelvey in an aerial challenge.

66
Gerrard has the chance to drive forward from midfield. But he has to slow down when looking for a team-mate and Schneiderlin can sneak in and take the ball.

65
This has not been a fluent display by Liverpool but they are continuing to dominate possession. They will be nervous, though. Southampton have looked dangerous in the flashes of counter-attacks.

64
Suarez wins a corner after a brilliant backheel to break into the Southampton penalty area. Shelvey's corner is cleared at the near post.

63
Southampton have been showing a bit more attacking ambition over the past five minutes.

62
Free-kick to Southampton just inside the Liverpool half after Ramirez is tripped. Good refereeing from Oliver, who pulled play back after allowing it to continue.

61
Lucas is finding his feet and takes the ball off Cork at the byline before setting Suarez forward on the attack. He beats Yoshida but Fonte is over to intercept.

60
Sterling manages to turn in the box but then releases a tame effort which rolls through to Gazzaniga. Suarez wanted the ball laid off and is not happy.

59
Lucas wins applause from the Anfield crowd after taking the ball off Lallana. That is what the midfielder is all about and it will have helped his confidence after a rusty game so far.

58
Liverpool attempt to start an attack down the left and Enrique crosses but the Spaniard had drifted offside and play is pulled back.

57
Corner to Liverpool on the right as a Shelvey cross is blocked. Gerrard takes the set-piece. But Skrtel is adjudged to have fouled Fonte.

56
A misunderstanding between Enrique and Allen puts Southampton on the attack. Ramirez takes on a 25-yard shot and hits it high and wide.

55
Gerrard is in yards of space on the right wing, which Liverpool have exposed today. But his cross does not find a team-mate. Liverpool's crossing from the right has been poor.

54
Liverpool work a third-man-run move with Enrique almost breaking into the box from Sterling and Suarez's interplay. But Enrique cannot quite reach the pass.

53
Southampton's fans are belting out a rendition of 'When the Saints Go Marching In'. Anfield is otherwise quiet.

52
Ramirez's corner is sent to the back post. Agger gets a vital, flicked header to the ball and sends it out for a throw-in on the far side.

51
Southampton move up the field and Cork wins a corner. Adkins' team have made a better start to the second half than they did the first.

50
Shelvey has space on the edge of the Southampton box but his pass finds neither Sterling or Gerrard and simply gifts the ball to the opposition.

49
Puncheon shoots from inside the Liverpool box and sees his effort deflect off Agger for a corner. Reina punches clear the corner and then catches Schneiderlin's follow-up cross.

48
Suarez attempts a flick to Gerrard when close to the touchline but Ramirez is back to intercept.

47
Lucas was unfortunate to be in the way of Agger's mistake but it has been a rusty return for the Brazilian who, after three months out, is understandably working his way back to full fitness and sharpness.

46
Clumsy start to the second half from Liverpool sees Agger's attempt at a long ball smacked into team-mate Lucas.

WE'RE BACK: Southampton get the second half going.

A world-record ribbon is unveiled at half-time on the pitch at Anfield, aiming to raise awareness for World AIDS Day 2012 and Living with HIV, Standard Chartered's global HIV and AIDS education programme.

Agger's header gives Liverpool the one-goal lead they deserve at half-time after a dominant performance. Southampton need to offer more going forward and also have to try and stop the flow of Liverpool attacks down the right.

45 + 1
HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 1 SOUTHAMPTON 0

45 + 1
Lambert almost stuns Reina with a shot from 40 yards. Reina is struggling and has to quickly backtrack and dive to tip the ball around the post. Southampton over hit the corner.

45
ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of one minute added time before half-time.

45
Ramirez, attempting to make up for his foul which led to Liverpool's goal, wins Southampton a corner. But, at the set-piece, Puncheon fouls Reina.

At the free-kick, Suarez hit a brilliant shot against the crossbar. Johnson collected the rebound on the right-hand side and his left-foot cross is headed into the back of the net by Agger. Liverpool deserve their lead.

43
GOAL AGGER (1-0)!!!

42
Ramirez leaves Suarez in a heap on the left corner of the box. This is a shooting opportunity from the free-kick and Suarez is over the ball.

41
From the goal-kick, there is almost a mix up between Skrtel as he nearly puts too much on a header back to the advancing Reina. Cork was lurking and could have taken advantage but Reina can just reach the ball.

40
Now Gerrard has a word with referee Oliver about the slow speed of Gazzaniga's goal-kicks.

39
Suarez aims to release Gerrard down the right but he puts too much on the pass and it goes out for a goal-kick.

38
Liverpool will know this half has epitomised their season - dominance but no goals. Southampton will want to keep frustrating their hosts and trying to hit them on the counter-attack.

37
Another free-kick for Southampton on a rare attack. Lallana takes but it is easily cleared by the Liverpool defence.

36
Shelvey hits the post. Liverpool move straight back on the front foot and after being teed up by Gerrard, Shelvey's cross-goal shot smacks the far post from 15 yards.

35
On a rare move forward, Southampton win a free-kick at least 35 yards from goal after Johnson fouls Lallana. Lambert shoots from the free-kick and hits it wide.

34
Adkins will know he cannot let his players continue to allow Liverpool to break down the right. One of these chances will surely be taken.

33
It is becoming a repeated theme but the combination of Sterling and Johnson open up Southampton down the right. Johnson then passes to Suarez, whose cross from inside the box is just over Enrique at the back post.

32
At the goal-kick, Gazzaniga receives a ticking off from referee Oliver over how long he is taking on set-pieces.

31
Liverpool keep the pressure on from the corner and Skrtel is found with a cross at the near post. But he gets his feet in a mess and the effort deflects for another corner. From the second set-piece, Skrtel heads over the crossbar.

30
A long ball from Reina finds Suarez behind the Southampton defence. But Yoshida and Fonte manage to clear for a corner.

29
Excellent goalkeeping from Reina, who is alert to rush from his area and head away a through ball to Lallana. The Southampton forward would have been through on goal.

28
Southampton need to make a tactical change to stop Liverpool's current dominance. It is too easy for the home team to get in down the right. Allen and Gerrard are also being given too much room in central areas to start attacks.

27
Liverpool will not be happy. Remember they have not had a penalty this season.

26
Suarez plays a one-two with Allen inside the penalty area and manages to get a volleyed shot on target. It is saved by Gazzaniga. But Suarez is furious he did not get a penalty before shooting. Replays show Cork was pulling his shirt. It could have been given.

25
Shelvey closes down Clyne and the deflected ball almost drops for Suarez to break forward on the edge of the box. But Fonte can intercept.

24
Johnson cuts into the penalty area from the right with a double step-over beating Shaw. Is left-footed shot is blocked by Gazzaniga. Shelvey then sees a shot across goal from a Gerrard pass palmed by the Southampton goalkeeper.

23
Suarez and the Liverpool fans are not happy with how long Gazzaniga is taking over goal-kicks.

22
Gerrard shots wide after a quick free-kick which allowed Suarez to set up his skipper from 25 yards. Liverpool are beginning to pin Southampton into their own half.

21
In a similar move to his goal against Newcastle, Suarez receives a great, long pass from Enrique in behind Fonte. But Suarez, inside the penalty area, is rightly stopped for a clear handball.

20
Lucas takes a quick corner, leaving Gerrard in the box. From the set-piece the ball finds Liverpool's captain with a run to the near post but his shot cannons into a crowd of Southampton defenders.

19
Again, Liverpool get in down the right. Johnson has acres of space to cross from the byline but again it is cleared for a corner at the near post.

18
Gerrard is not impressed with referee Oliver when being punished for handball in the Southampton half. Skrtel then takes a chance when body-checking Ramirez at a time when the ball was rolling through to Reina.

17
Suarez has the chance to break forward but he has his head down and does not see Sterling and Enrique to his left. Fonte is able to tackle on the edge of the Southampton box.

16
Agger makes a vital interception with a volley to prevent a Lambert cross from reaching Puncheon.

15
Ramirez has the ball in the Liverpool box after a lovely pass from Lallana. Liverpool make a bit of a mess of clearing the ball after a few ricochets but Gerrard is able to deal with the danger.

14
Suarez was limping a little after that challenge for the corner with Clyne. But he seems to be moving okay now.

13
As always under Rodgers, Liverpool have both full-backs Enrique and Johnson in advanced positions. But Lucas' attempt at a cross-field pass hit out of play.

12
Liverpool are starting to dominate and Sterling has switched to the left, with Shelvey moving to the right.

11
The first corner is cleared but Liverpool remain on the attack and Suarez wins a second set-piece from Clyne. Gerrard takes the corner but it is an easy catch for Gazzaniga.

10
Liverpool are having a lot of joy down the right. Johnson has room to attack with Shaw occupied with Sterling. A Johnson cross and near-miss at the back post leads to a Liverpool corner.

9
Let off for Fonte as his poor defensive header fall straight to Shelvey. The midfield snaps at his shot and volleys it into the ground from inside the box.

8
Lucas shows all of his positioning knowledge when back close to his own byline. He plays the ball of Southampton youngster Shaw for a goal-kick.

7
Very calm play by Enrique, who has hit some fine form over recent weeks. Under pressure from an Allen pass, he gives Puncheon a dummy and can run the ball out of defence.

6
Allen, who has the chance to push further forward today, spreads a pass wide to the right and finds Sterling. But the teenager's cross from the byline does not beat the first man.

5
Lucas, Gerrard and Allen attempt to pass the ball in a triangle in midfield but Puncheon intercepts close to the halfway line.

4
It is easy to see why Adkins thinks his team are full of confidence. They have not been afraid to be positive in the opening minutes and are passing the ball nicely.

3
Lucas is out muscled by Lambert in midfield and the Southampton striker moves forward before hit a swerving shot just wide of the target from 25 yards at the Kop end.

2
Gerrard takes the free-kick but it is headed away by the first line of Southampton defenders on the edge of their own box.

1
It is a steady start from Liverpool, who go back to their defence and pass the ball before working up field and Yoshida fouls Johnson.

KICK-OFF: Liverpool get the game going.

Here come the teams. Liverpool and Southampton emerge from the famous Anfield tunnel. Kick-off is less than five minutes away.

Jamie Warrior says: "I reckon Southampton are going to run riot as Liverpool like Chelsea have struggled this season. So I say 3-1. Lallana with a couple, Lambert with the other. Suarez for a pen and scoring the consolation. Liverpool to finish with 10 men... C'mon Southampton!"

Sky Bet have plenty of markets on this afternoon's game, if you fancy trying to win a few quid. The bookies have Liverpool at 1/3, the draw at fours and Southampton 15/2. Unsurprisingly, Suarez is the 5/2 favourite to opening the scoring and the Uruguayan is also only 10/1 to net a hat-trick.

Duncan Hay says: "Rodgers playing his best 11, great to see Lucas back such a huge miss for us. Can't see anything other than a Liverpool win."

Charlie Skinner says: "Great to see Lucas back in the team, Allen finally given the opportunity to push forward! 3-0 to the reds, Gerrard brace."

14.42
Here is a round-up of all the team news. Liverpool midfielder Lucas makes his first appearance for three months. The Brazil international has only 74 minutes of previous Premier League action this season but is immediately recalled, along with Jonjo Shelvey, as manager Brendan Rodgers makes two changes from the defeat at Tottenham. Southampton boss Adkins, a boyhood Liverpool fan, goes with the same team which drew with Norwich in midweek.

14.40
OPTA FACT: Southampton have won three of the last four Premier League meetings with Liverpool but they have not met since January 2005.

Felix says: "I am predicting a goal-fest and shock result. 3-2 TO THE SAINTS!!!!"

14.35
Paul Herdman says: "I think Liverpool will be too strong for Saints today and will win 4-0 Suarez hat-trick and Gerrard penalty!"

14.34
Wayne Montaut says: "I wonder whether Brendan is going false number 9 with Gerrard's lack of engine. Utilising his other skills??"

14.32
Southampton's Scouse manager, Nigel Adkins, has said his squad 'have a spring in their step' after a four-game unbeaten run. But they remain in the relegation zone. It will be an emotional day for Adkins and striker Rickie Lambert, who had youth trials with Liverpool.

14.26
Steve Pitchford says: "Saints to win 2-1 today with Super Ricky Lambert winner."
