FT: Tottenham 2 Aston Villa 0

FULL TIME. Tottenham 2 Aston Villa 0.

N'Zogbia gives up the chase against Adebayor, whose cross is claimed well by Guzan. Two minutes injury time to be played.

Bannan shows good endeavour to prevent a corner being conceded in a good challenge on Bale, but Spurs pick up possession instantly from Guzan's goal kick.

Dembele goes for the spectacular with a curling left-footed strike from 30 yards. It's high and wide though much to Guzan's relief.

Villa eventually find the run of Bent, but Spurs push them back with the visitors looking very lethargic now after a hard day's effort.

Clark carelesly gives the ball away and Spurs break, with Bale dreadfully unlucky as he cannons a shot off the post - via an excellent Guzan stop - before Bannan clears.

And that's the end of Lennon's man-of-the-match performance as he comes off for Townsend.

Lowton is found by Benteke but the magnificent Lennon makes the tackle to prevent a cross coming in.

Bannan heads away from Lennon's ball but 10-man Villa are really stretched as Spurs camp out in their half waiting to strike.

Benteke looks for Bent, and if the ball had have come off it would have been terrific but it lands straight at the feet of Caulker.

Second change of the game for Spurs as Dempsey comes off for Sigurdsson.

Bannan has been shifted to left-back as Villa look to hold on for the final few minutes. Bale rifles a shot away from range as Spurs look for a third but he drags his effort wide.

Adebayor takes aim but can only find the hands of Guzan with a looping shot from 20 yards.

N'Zogbia digs in but eventually is worn down by the numbers advantage and can't register a shot from the edge of the area.

Bennett comes off to an ovation from all over the ground, and Villa will play the rest of the game now with 10 men.

Vlaar makes another timely challenge on Adebayor, as without a left-back temporarily, Villa are suddenly much weaker on the left side.

The stretcher is on and this looks very bad indeed for the Villa man. Play resumes but it looks to be the end of Bennett's game.

Sadly for the Villa left-back, he's taken a knock in that collision and looks to be in some distress.

Bennett does brilliantly to force Bale to the byline, showing brilliant strength to not only prevent a cross coming in but earn a goal kick for his team.

Adebayor holds up play on the right, with Lennon's excellently cross incredibly headed wide by Dempsey inside the six-yard box!

Holman is taken off after a good shift and Bannan is the man to replace him.

Walker picks up a booking after hauling down Holman on the overlap from N'Zogbia's pass.

It's all Spurs now as Clark dives in to prevent Adebayor an opening, and Villa fans will surely just be hoping their side can hold on to this 2-0 deficit.

Adebayor ends up getting in Lennon's way to deny the winger what would have been a certain shot on goal.

Spurs are claiming a penalty but it would have been harsh against Clark, who tried to pull his hand out of the way of Lennon's cross.

Walker has a thunderous pop and Bennett gets in the way, his unknowing header preventing what could have been goal of the season.

Dembele oozes class as he skips away from N'Zogbia, but Walker can't find Vertonghen on the overlap and a promising attack comes to an end.

Defoe comes off with Adebayor his replacement.

Spurs are looking really strong now as Lennon picks it up from Dempsey and fires a wicked shot across goal to leave Guzan no chance. 2-0 and perhaps game over.

Double substitution for Villa as Delph and Albrighton are replaced by Bent and N'Zogbia.

Bale unleashes a shot from the edge of the area but Guzan shows good hands to smother the effort confidently.

Bennett clears away from Bale as Lennon teases the left-back, his cross then cleared by Vlaar.

Darren Bent looks to be getting ready to come on for Villa, with the Villa fans no doubt hopeful he can produce a second super sub cameo within a week.

Lowton makes an industrious run down the right, with Delph taking aim from 20 yards but while it's not far off it's not troubling Lloris.

Villa's midfielder are running themselves ragged but Spurs continue to attack, with Defoe coming inches away from adding a second with a thunderous strike over the bar.

And they have! It's a deflection that takes it in but a corner falls to Defoe whose strike cannons off Caulker to leave Guzan helpless. 1-0 to Tottenham!

Vlaar then Bennett head away the Spurs set-piece, but their fans can't help but feel their team must be getting nearer.

Yellow card for El Ahmadi for a cynical tackle on Lennon.

Excellent stuff from Dembele as he turns past El Ahmadi, finding Defoe who finds a yard and shoots inches wide of Guzan's goal. Brilliant chance for the hosts.

Vertonghen's free-kick is aimed for the far post but Vlaar marshalls Caulker well, cutting off his movement and forcing his fellow centre-back to head wide.

A Villa set piece lands on Agbonlahor's head but Vlaar nods it straight into Lloris' path. A poor throw-in gives it back to Holman though, with Benteke incredibly heading wide from six yards!

Gallas takes a poke to the eye from Benteke, but the Spurs defender refuses treatment and braves on.

Gallas sweeps up neatly under pressure from Benteke. Up the other end though Bennett is equally as efficient in nudging Lennon off the ball and earning a goal kick for his side.

Spurs threaten with menacing intent but Lowton does terrifically against Bale, but his clearance only ends up with Vertonghen as the home pressure continues.

Vertonghen looks to tear the net apart with an outrageous 30-yard drive. It's wide of Guzan's post in the end though.

Agbonlahor makes a strong run down the left and finds Benteke who incredibly fires straight at Lloris! Best chance of the game so far for Villa.

Spurs kick off the second half.

Scott Day predicts: "Spurs to come out on top next half, with Defoe and Dempsey scoring. If we don't beat Villa by a two-goal margin I'll be disappointed."

Both teams have had their chances but the goalkeepers have come out on top so far, with Spurs looking the more likely to take the lead before the break. Send your second half predictions to jack.woodfield@bskyb.com

HALF TIME. Tottenham 0 Aston Villa 0.

Lowton takes an elbow to the face from Defoe and receives treatment as both managers take the time to have words with their players with seconds left of the first half.

Another free-kick is beaten away by Lloris, who continues to impress in his first Premier League start.

Vlaar and Agbonlahor hussle superb on Dempsey and Walker with Villa's defenders really holding their own against Spurs' avalanche of attacking talent.

Albrighton's free-kick is cleared by Sandro, a rather poor effort from the winger which barely reached the box.

Dempsey finds Lennon but Bennett positions himself well to cut out his shot, doing even better moments later to force Sandro wide and watch his cross sail behind goal.

Lennon crosses in a teasing cross into the box and Guzan smothers brilliantly to prevent Defoe a sure-fire goal as Spurs continue to look the more likely to break the deadlock here.

Walker covers well to cut off the run of Benteke through Holman's ball, with Holman really looking to pull the strings for Villa.

Vlaar is again on top form to get in the way of a Defoe shot, with the game becoming more open by the second now.

Wonderful work from Lloris. Holman plays in Agbonlahor but Lloris comes flying out of his goal to smother the ball and deny the striker.

El Ahmadi makes a timely tackle as if he'd have missed it Bale and Lennon would have been lurking to storm through on Villa's goal.

Delph concedes a free-kick on Dempsey, with the free-kick falling to the all-action Vertonghen who turns and fires narrowly over. Spurs are certainly getting nearer.

Bale's delivery is uncharacteristically shocking and it lands out of play before anyone had the chance to react.

Bennett concedes a corner to Spurs as he makes a wonderfully timed tackle on Dembele near the byline.

Benteke slides in on Sandro and is perhaps a tad unlucky to concede a foul, but Spurs play the free-kick quickly with Vlaar on hand again to deny Vertonghen a shot on goal.

Delph is caught in possession and Spurs break with Lennon. He plays in Defoe who does well to turn from Clark but ends firing wide from 15 yards.

Benteke heads on Clark's ball but the only ones giving chase are Caulker and Gallas. Villa eventually win the ball back through Holman, but Benteke is then caught offside.

Lennon and Dempsey cause havoc until Villa reorganise and Dempsey's cross from the left is deflected into the arms of Guzan.

Delph is fuming after a rather poor challenge on Dembele is rightfully deemed a foul. Free-kick to Spurs roughly 30 yards from goal.

Lennon tracks back to win the ball off Benteke superbly. Spurs lose out as Clark makes a timely interception from Bale though.

Lovely skill from El Ahmadi to hold off Sandro, with Villa looking to progress up the pitch as Lloris smothers Delph's ball to Agbonlahor.

Delph clearances and Albrighton races with Caulker for the ball, with the Spurs defender doing enough to meet it and play back to Lloris.

Gallas bursts forward, and his influence helps the ball on to Bale, who crosses in with that man Vlaar then again to head behind.

Bale shows industry down the left, and Vlaar, tested to the full, ends up making an excellent tackle on the danger man.

Benteke fires a rocket away forcing a powerful punch away from Lloris at the near post. Brilliant work from both players.

Agbonlahor nearly plays his team into trouble but Villa recover as Spurs pick up the ball and look to probe for an opening.

Bennett fires a couple of powerful crosses into the box but Caulker and Vertongen react well respectively. Moments later, Sandro slides through Agbonlahor and concedes a free-kick.

Lennon makes brilliant progress but after dealing with Bennett his drilled delivery is cleared by a push of the heel from Vlaar.

Bale takes a clattering on the left as El Ahmadi lunges in and leaves the Wales winger with a distinct pain in his back.

Benteke is unfortunate as his pass to Holman ends up taking a deflection into the welcome arms of Lloris.

Bale's extraordinary pace sees him skip past Delph but Vlaar does well to close him and concede a corner.

Walker does well to prevent a corner being conceded after neat link-up play between Holman and Bennett down the left.

Agbonlahor's shot clatters off Caulker as Villa probe. Holman then tries to play in Bennett but Gallas marks his run all the way and makes the tackle.

El Ahmadi goes for the outrageous with a 30-yard drive that carries a punch but ends up safely with the fans.

Bale is threatening left, right and centre as Dempsey plays him in but his lay-off catches the ventruing Vertonghen unaware and Guzan claims.

As replays show Guzan took none of the ball in that tackle, Defoe gets another shot away but it's straight at the Villa keeper.

Guzan makes an incredible decision to storm out the traps and slide into Bale. He looks to take a slice of the ball, credit to him though and Spurs are only awarded a throw-in.

Clark's searching ball up is cleared by Vertonghen, but good hussling from the industrious Holman prevents Walker breaking down the right.

EL Ahmadi has made some nice early touches for Villa, with every attack made by the visitors involving him in the build-up. For now though, Villa just look to hold up possession in the centre of the park.

Bale's whipped free-kick across goal is inches away from contact with Vertonghen as Villa continue to live dangerously in these early stages.

Benteke and Holman link up promisingly but Spurs close off the gaps and in the end the striker's control lets him down - allowing Vertonghen to take charge.

Solid defending from Vertongen as the Belgian defender blocks off Villa's route down the right, before Spurs eventually earn a throw-in after a tussle between Albrighton and Caulker.

Lloris claims his first cross of the day from Bennett, and within seconds Spurs waste a second chance in as many minutes as Bale returns the favour for Defoe who skies his shot over the bar from close range.

Strong early chance for Spurs as Defoe charges across the park and finds Bale. His drive to the far post lands wide though - an early warning for the visitors!

Aston Villa kick-off and get the game underway.

The players are on the pitch are we're moments away from kick-off here.

Brian Cook writes: "I would be happy with a draw but cannot see the Villa getting a win, mind you we are due a win against Spurs! We get some of our better results away from home. Be good if Bent could do what he did last week come off the bench and score against one of his old sides."

The referee for today's clash is Neil Swarbrick (Lancashire).

Aston Villa: Guzan, Bennett, Vlaar, Clark, Lowton, Holman, El Ahmadi, Delph, Albrighton, Benteke, Agbonlahor. Subs: Given, Bent, N'Zogbia, Westwood, Bannan, Weimann, Lichaj.

Tottenham: Lloris, Walker, Gallas, Caulker, Vertonghen, Lennon, Dembele, Sandro, Bale, Defoe, Dempsey. Subs: Friedel, Huddlestone, Adebayor, Dawson, Sigurdsson, Falque, Townsend.

And here are the teams in full.

Jon Opie writes: "As a Villa fan in London with lots of Tottenham supporters as friends i'm really hoping for this new look Villa side and it's up and coming talent to get a result today! Will be interesting to see how the young boys deal with Bale and co."

It appears the news is filtering around now that Hugo Lloris will start ahead of Brad Friedel today and two Spurs fans are rather perplexed as to why. Rishi Chowdhury writes: "Why on earth does Lloris start in goal? What has Friedel done wrong? disappointed in AVB think he has been pressured into that one." while Mark Siggers adds: "Big decision to bring Brad Friedel's incredible run of games to an end today. In my humble opinion, Brad has not put a foot wrong this season (except his distribution at times in the Utd. game). The pressure will be on Lioris from the start. He is a class keeper though and should be okay."
