Rovers began strongly on Saturday and took an early lead when Gomes headed a cross from Bruno Ribiero into the path of Mauro Formica, who slid the ball home (6).

Former Newcastle striker Leon Best saw a header cleared off the line before combining with skipper Danny Murphy to set up Portuguese winger Fabio Nunes, whose effort just cleared the crossbar.

Fleetwood went close themselves when striker Jon Parkin saw a powerful shot deflected over but they rode their luck at the other end as Best had a shot cleared off the line after the restart.

The second goal for Steve Kean's side finally came when Gomes volleyed home from 15 yards via the inside of the upright.

Shortly after the hour mark a powerful forward run from Best set up Nunes but his shot was cleared off the line by a defender, before the same player had an effort tipped around the post 15 minutes from time.
