FT: Man Utd 1 Galatasaray 0

The other game in the group ended Braga 0 Cluj 2. United go to Cluj in the next set of matches on October 2. Thanks for joining us tonight.

All over and United have scraped home with a 1-0 win thanks to Carricks' seventh-minute goal. But Galatasaray had two penalty shouts turned down, hit the woodwork twice and forced De Gea into some good saves. They can count themselves unlucky to leave without a point.

At the other end, Hernandez tries a spectacular volley but the effort is well over the bar.

Another Gala penalty appeal is turned down. Very similar to the one in the first minute - Evans takes a heavy touch and then appears to catch Yilmaz as the Turk tries to nick the ball away. The ref waves play on but Gala are furious and rightly so it would seem. United fortunate again there.

Nani surges forward and his pass finds Hernandez, onside, in the box. He tries go past the keeper and shoots. The effort appears to beat Muslera but Nounkeu is there to block the goalbound effort.

There will be five added minutes, the fourth official signals.

Eboue needs treatment but eventually comes back onto the field.

Eboue in pain again after a tussle with Welbeck. Looks like a clash of knees.

Valencia ends a fine run on the right with what appears to be a dive in the penalty area. Nounkeu may jut have caught him, the replay isn't conclusive. Either way, the game continues.

Substitute Hernandez shoots past the near post after a good move involving a lay-off from welbeck and a good through ball from Nani.

United make their final change. Danny Welbeck comes ofor Kagawa, one of their better performers this evening.

The two Yilmaz's fail to combine as Gala's latest attack fails. Their challenge could be fizzling out now.

Colak tries to cross from the left but it's a poor one and goes behind for a goal kick.

That's your lot, Robin. Fergie gives him the hook with Javier Hernandez coming on. Not before time really.

Van Persie's bad night goes from bad to worse. He's booked for bringing down Elmander.

There's also a change for the visitors - Aydin Yilmaz replaces Melo.

Here's the change. Fletcher is back after 10 months out. No surprise to see Scholes come off.

It looks like Darren Fletcher will be coming on shortly for United.

Van Persie finds Kagawa who has a shot blocked. Seconds later the ball is knocked into the Dutchman in the box but again he can't control to get a shot off.

United have another chance to put the game to bed but blow it. Kagawa does well to set up the attackm finding Nani who drives on. He picks out Van Persie in space but his control is dreadful and the chance is gone. That sums up his night - the worst I've seen him for some time.

Messi has bailed Barca out in Spain where it's now 2-2.

The corner comes to nothing.

Again Gala go close to pulling level. They break on United for the umpteenth time tonight. Yilmaz bears down on goal but De Gea denies him with a strong save. The rebound falls to Colak and his effort from the edge of the box has De Gea at full stretch but the Spaniard again comes up with the stop. Corner.

From the corner, Nani wants a penalty. He appeared to be tripped by Elmander. Nothing doing says the ref.

Almost the killer goal for United. Kagawa plays in Evra down the left. In the box, he hits a shot from a tight angle which the keeper does well to tip away for a corner.

Big shock brewing in Barcelona where Spartak Moscow have come from behind to lead 2-1. It's still Braga 0 Cluj 2 in the other game in United's group.

Kaya bails out Inan who had sold him short against Van Persie. Danger averted.

A ball from Melo into the United box is well defended by the home defence.

Eboue down again. It's the old water on the leg treatment from the physio. Real 21st century stuff.

Second Galatasaray change. Emre Colak replaces Amrabat, who impressed down the right-hand side.

Ah, how we've missed the sight of Eboue rolling around on the floor. He's down but was caught and Gala have a free kick. It's played into the box but De Gea claims easily.

Vidic is yellow-carded after clashing with Yilmaz. It looks like he caught the Turk in the face with his arm. The German ref certainly thinks so.

Van Persie lifts a volley high over the bar from the edge of the box. He's done little so far this evening.

Nani and Evra combine well down the left and United win a corner. From it, Vidic rises superbly and nods over. The replay shows the keeper got a touch on that but a goal kick results.

Melo goes into the book for a late challenge on Rafael.

You have to say Gala really don't deserve to be behind at this stage. But it's United who lead 1-0 thanks to that early Carrick effort.

So close to an equaliser. Altintop delivers a cross from the right. It's met by a glancing header from Inan at the near post and it loops agonisingly wide of the far post. It looked in all the way but just went the wrong side of the upright.

Selcuk Inan lifts a free kick into the United box but Evans defends it well with a clearing header.

Well, United really are making this hard for themselves. Plenty of surprise that Nani and not Van Persie did not take the penalty. I suppose the Dutchman did miss the other week at Southampton. Who's up for the next one?

Nani misses the spot kick! He stops in his run-up in a bid to fool the keeper. When he does strike the ball, his effort is too close to the keeper who saves by diving to his right.

Penalty to United as Rafael is brought down. The full-back surged into the box and was tripped by Burak Yılmaz.

A long ball is hit towards Amrabat in loads of space down the middle but the Gala man fails to control the ball. Had he done so, United would have been in a spot of bother.

Altintop goes close for Galatasaray. Amrabat lays the ball off to hm and from outside the box his low shot creeps just wide of the goal. De Gea dived at that one to show you how close it was.

The flag kick is wasted as van Persie fouls Kaya as the ball comes over. Free kick to the visitors.

Good link-up play between Nani and Kagawa in the box almost produces something. A series of passes between the two ends with Kagawa shooting but Semih Kaya does well to get a block in. Corner.

Restart: Galatasaray get the game back under way.

"The concentration and passing has got to be better. We've allowed them back into the game by simply giving the ball away." That's the HT assessment of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Should mention that it's 2-0 to Cluj at half time in Braga.

Cameron Bates writes: "If United can maintain possession and defend well we could go for another goal, maybe put Welbeck on and Anderson." A lot of ifs and coulds there Cameron...

United fans, are you fearing a repeat of last year's Champions League woe? It certainly look pretty similar so far. Let me have your feedback - andy.schooler@bskyb.com.

Having a half-time bet? United to win 1-0 has been price-boosted to 11/2 by Sky Bet, while 1-1 is out to 11/1. Head over to www.skybet.com to get those prices now.

There's the half-time whistle. United lead but only just. Carrick scored early by Galatasaray have not folded. They've hit the woodwork twice and are certainly giving the hosts a game.

Two added minutes to be played in this half.

Scholes loses possession in his own half and Altintop surges towards the box. Just as he shoots, the chasing Carrick puts in a challenge from around the side. He just manages to get a boot to half-block the shot. The Turks call for a foul but the ref says no.

Amrabat shoots from the edge of the box but the low effort lacks any real power and De Gea gathers comfortably.

The corners are building up for Gala as Evans dives to head the ball behind. Another soon follows.

It's now 2-0 to Cluj away to Braga in the other group game.

That's the second time Galatasaray have hit the woodwork. They should also have had a penalty. This is no easy game for United.

The free kick almost produces the equaliser. A well-worked set piece sees the ball pulled back to the edge of the penalty area from where Altintop drills a low shot against the outside of the post.

Amrabat gets to the byline on the right and crosses. Vidic clears but the officials have spotted something - they've ruled Evra caught Amrabat after he crossed the ball. It's a free kick in a testing position and Evra is handed a yellow card.

A decent spell this for the Turks as they win another corner. This one is well defended at the near post by the hosts.

Altintop tries an ambitious shot from the free kick. It's hit too low though and Evans manages to boot clear.

Gala win a free kick in a dangerous position - it's around 35 yards from goal.

In this group's other game, Romanians Cluj have taken a 1-0 lead in Portugal against Braga. That's good news for the tip I made on bettingzone.co.uk!

United penalty calls are turned down. Kagawa is played into the box. He battles through one challenge but Nounkeu wins the ball in the second. There was never going to be a penalty there.

Nothing comes from the corner. United clear.

Decent attack from Gala sees Eboue surge into the box on the right. He shoots for goal but Patrice Evra does well to get a boot in and force a corner.

Good move from United ends in a corner. Van Persie lays off to Scholes who picks out Valencia's overlapping run down the right. A threatening cross is produced this time but Dany Nounkeu, Gala's Cameroon defender, heads it behind. The corner is headed wide by Nani.

Again the Turks look for Melo from the set piece. He doesn't get clean contact this time but the ball runs to Hamit Alt├Żntop on the edge of the box and his shot is partially blocked before United clear.

Another corner to Galatasaray down the right.

The first quiet period of the game arrives. United still lead - and it could be more than 1-0 - but they have been in a game.

Valencia again finds space on the right. He reverts to his earlier form though, producing a cross which is nowhere near a red shirt.

Finally a cross from Valencia is a troublesome one but amid much panic, the visitors manage to clear the ball as it bobbles in their own six-yard box. It may have hit Eboue's arm after the keeper pushed it there.

Melo looks a bit groggy and the physio continues to work on his head.

From the flag kick, Melo gets in front of Carrick to get a header on goal but it's up and over. He's also hurt and needs treatment as his head clattered into Carrick's after heading the ball.

Gala win their first corner down the right-hand side.

Nani's corner is initially headed out but the ball comes back. Scholes then hits a shot which is deflected against Kagawa who can't quite latch onto the rebound. Another corner follows but that one is dealt with more comfortably.

Another poor cross from Valencia is needlessly turned into a corner by Eboue's poor control.

By the way, the other teams in this group are Braga and Cluj. They are currently 0-0 in Portugal.

Here's the change - and it's former Bolton man Elmander coming on in place of Bulut.

Gala might be about to make a change. It seems Bulut is struggling with an injury, possibly from taking Vidic's studs in his Achilles in that first-minute incident.

A trademark cross-field pass from Scholes finds Valencia but the former Wigan man can't produce anything like the same quality with his attempted cross. Poor.

Good tackle from Carrick inside his own half on Felipe Melo prevents another Gala attack from gathering pace.

The pocket of Gala fans are certainly making their voices heard in the corner tonight.

All go so far at Old Trafford. United are having plenty of the ball in midfield but have been caught with too many in front of the ball on several occasions already.

Amrabat almost equalises but clips the bar! Again the Turks break on United and Amrabat is played in down the inside left channel. He opts for a curling shot from just outside the box but it clips the woodwork with De Gea beaten.

Not a good start for the visitors, especially given they should have had a penalty in the first minute.

GOAL - CARRICK! United move in front. Carrick surges forward, lays off to Kigawa, who controls the ball before laying it off to Carrick whose run into the box has not been tracked. Onside he tries to round the keeper, is tripped but despite that still manages to put the ball into the net. 1-0.

Almost the breakthrough for United. Kigawa runs at the Turks' defence and plays in Nani. Up against the keeper, the Portuguese can't lift the ball over him and the save is made.

Nordin Amrabat is caught offside thus wasting a promising Gala attack after they break on United.

Nani tries to find Van Persie on the edge of the box. The pass is slightly wayward but the ball runs to Valencia who then has a shot charged down.

Unlike many Champions League games, this one has started at a pretty furious pace. More like a Premier League clash so far.

A cross from the right by Antonio Valencia is comfortably taken by keeper Fernando Musiera.

An early challenge in United's own box by Vidic is a risky one. Ref Wolfgang Stark waves play on but Bulut looked like he was caught on the back of the leg.

Kick-off: United get the game under way in their usual red shirts. Gala are in white shirts and black shorts tonight.

The teams have just come out onto the pitch at Old Trafford - we'll be under way shortly.

Akshay Bist finishes things off pre-match by saying: "As a United fan I'm happy to see Fletcher back. The guy is a stand-up player and had been really unlucky. Missed three finals - once because of illness, once he was an unused sub and once because of an unjust suspension. Hopefully this time he gets his chance. United have what looks like an easy group, and hopefully will not get complacent this time around. At home after a good win in the league, should be a win for United."

John Bagust is in confident mood and agrees with Liam: "I think United will show City how it is done tonight with a comfortable 3-0 win."

Liam Ogden writes: "A strong line-up tonight. Hoping for some magic from our two in-form strikers, Robin and Shinji. My money is on Van Persie first goal and 3-0."

Yitzchok Davies emails: "I think Bulut will pull a defending mistake off Vidic! But still reckon United can pull off a 3-2 win."

Some of your views now. Roger Clarke says: "As a United fan you have to be optimistic tonight. We are on a revenge mission with Gala, and that will offer enough fire and determination for the boys to come through. Looking at the line-ups, I see a comfortable 3-1 home win. With regard to the season, we always have to enter competitions expecting to win. The Champions League is no different. With the added strength brought by the acquisitions of RVP, Kagawa and to a degree Buttner, we have got a significantly increased attacking threat. This United side is capable of beating any team in the world at any time. However, with a knack of picking up defensive injuries, and continued lapses of concentration at the back, our realistic hopes of winning aren't as strong as we would like."

So, what do you think of tonight's line-ups? And what of United's chances in the Champions League this season? They made a right hash of things last term, going out at this first stage. Have things really changed in the last 12 months or do their problems at the back prevail? Let me know your thoughts by emailing me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

If you've yet to place your bet, you may be intersted to know Sky Bet have boosted their price on United winning 2-1 to 8/1. United start 2/7 shots, with Gala out at 9/1. United drew at home to both Basel and Benfica in the Champions League group stage last season. A draw tonight can be backed at 9/2. Place your bets now at www.skybet.com.

Team news: Galatsasaray have former Arsenal full-back Emmanuel Eboue in their line-up but ex-Bolton striker Johan Elmander is only on the bench, along with Albert Reira, once of Liverpool. Watch out up front for Umut Bulut, who has scored five goals in Gala's first four games in their domestic league.

Team news: Robin van Persie returns to the Manchster United starting XI at Old Trafford tonight. He'll be the main striker with Shinji Kagawa in behind in the absence of the injured Wayne Rooney. The choice in central defence is Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans, while David De Gea is back in goal. An interesting substitute is Darren Fletcher after 10 months away from the first team due to illness.

Galatasaray: Muslera, Eboue, Nounkeu, Kaya, Balta, Altintop, Felipe Melo, Inan, Amrabat, Burak Yilmaz, Bulut. Subs: Ceylan, Cris, Aydin Yilmaz, Elmander, Riera, Baytar, Colak.

Manchester United: De Gea, Rafael, Evans, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Scholes, Nani, Kagawa, Van Persie. Subs: Lindegaard, Ferdinand, Anderson, Hernandez, Welbeck, Cleverley, Fletcher

Kick-off is 1945 BST
