FT: CFR Cluj 1 Manchester United 2

The referee blows the whistle to signal the end of the game, and, in the end, that's a deserved 2-1 win for United. Thanks for joining us.

Rooney heads the corner away this time.

Chance for Cluj! Bastos with a smart near-post header and De Gea saves it well. Corner.

There will be three minutes of added time.

Rafael heads it partially clear and Rooney finishes the job.

United head the corner clear and regain possession.

Cluj break forward with Nicoara but his shot is blocked by Fletcher. Cluj corner.

David De Gea does well to claim the high ball under pressure.

Bastos takes the free-kick but RVP heads that one away.

Ferdinand receives a caution for a high challenge on Bastos.

Welbeck picks the ball up in midfield and has to wait for his teammates to catch up with him.

Hernandez off, Welbeck on. If you hadn't noticed the game has been disrupted by substitutions.

Aguirregaray off, Viorel Nicoara on.

Evans off Scott Wootton on. Big night for the young man.

Cluj win a free-kick but it's in their own half and they haven't threatened at all in the last 15 minutes.

Rooney is the general in the United midfield tonight and it's a role he's relishing.

Anderson strides forward with purpose. It's all United.

Evra goes down in the Cluj box but there's nothing doing there.

Anderson wins a free-kick. United are keeping the ball well.

De Gea pumps one forward.

Rooney slides a gorgeous pass across the six-yard line but Hernandez can't quite get there. Think Gazza in '96 (almost).

A wayward Cluj pass gives United possession deep inside the home side's half.

Evans wins it cleanly just as Cluj were looking dangerous.

Bastos does well to retain possession and he curls one out wide to Pinto. The Cluj move soon breaks down, though, and United have the ball back.

Hernandez thinks he's through but the referee's stopped the game. He wasn't offside - must've been for the challenge by RVP.

I won't do that again but United are happy to keep possession now they have their noses in front.

Anderson, Rooney, Anderson, Cleverley, Rafael, Ferdinand, Rafael, Anderson, Fletcher, Cleverley, Rooney, Evra, RVP, Anderson, Rafael, Rooney, Anderson. United keep the ball well during that move. I didn't anticipate them keeping it so well when I began the list.

And with that, Kapetanos is replaced by Sasa Bjelanovic. Get off.

Kapetanos tries to spread play to the Cluj right but his pass intended for Laszio Sepsi is overhit.

Rafael wins a free-kick on the right. United keep it rather than swinging one in.

United have a period of sustained possession for the first time since they went in front.

Cluj are winning everything in the air and they do so again from the latest corner, but it comes to nothing this time.

Cadu wins the header from the corner and that's a good reflex save from David de Gea. Another corner.

Cluj corner. Muresan has a free header and that's another corner.

Evans does well against Kapetanos in the United box.

Hernandez is caught offside as he collects the throughball from Rooney.

Gabriel Muresan finds goalscorer Kapetanos with a low cross from the right but this time the striker fires it high over the bar.

Rooney is the focus of all United's supply lines and he tries the same trick with Hernandez this time. No goal on this occasion though.

GOAL! VAN PERSIE! Rooney chips a ball into the Cluj box and van Persie pokes a lovely, deft, left-foot finish into the corner. 2-1 Man Utd.

Rooney shoots from distance and he gets a corner out of it. RVP takes the flag kick and after a small game of head tennis it goes out for a goal kick.

United work it well in the middle of the park but then Anderson gives it away.

Cluj kick off the second half.

Vuk Milicevic says: "Surely United need more width? Cluj is packing all their men down the middle. Possibly Nani on for Hernandez and put RvP and Rooney up top."

Ed Morgans says: "Better potential new defender signing for Manchester United - orange traffic cone, or vending machine you are trying to avoid?"

Sky Bet have boosted some prices at the break. Wayne Rooney to score next and United to win 2-1 is 10/1. Manchester United to win 3-1 is 11/2. Manchester United to win is 8/11. Fill your boots. I'm keeping quiet after preditcing a United clean sheet. Yes I have seen them play this season. I thought they might learn from their mistakes.

If you want to ask me anything about the game or life in general email ben.linfoot@bskyb.com. We've 15 minutes to fill and I need to avoid that vending machine.

There was one minute of added time and it was uneventful. 1-1 at the break.

29 metres to be precise. Rooney goes for goal but it's got no pace on it and that's easy for the goalkeeper.

Van Persie wins a free-kick for United by drawing a challenge from Bastos. It's a fair way out.

Rooney stoops low to head a Rafael cross wide of goal.

Rooney's corner is a deep one. It eventually breaks to Cleverley who falls over in the box and appeals for a penalty. The referee rightly ignores him.

United win another corner.

Cleverley keeps United ticking in midfield and eventually the ball finds Rafael on the United right, but his cross is too deep.

Ferdinand blocks a Cluj shot and then Fletcher tidies up.

Van Persie robs Pinto on the touchline but Cluj work hard to regain possession.

Evra wins a corner after a good run down the United left.

Bastos tries to flick a pass through the United defence but Ferdinand reads that one.

RVP controls it on his left thigh well in the Cluj area and Felgueiras makes a good save to deny the Ducthman.

Rafael Bastos is shoved out of the way by Rooney, but Cluj continue with their attack.

Very important for United to strike back before half-time and they've done it. They need to cut out the defensive lapses now.

GOAL! VAN PERSIE! Rooney curls in the free-kick and RVP shoulders it into the Cluj net. It loops over Mario Felgueiras and it's lucky, but United are level. 1-1.

Free-kick to United on their left.

Rooney fires one in low. Cluj clear. United aren't testing the Romanians yet, despite dominating possession.

Robin van Persie crosses one in from the United right but Cluj deal with that easily.

Ivo Pinto runs the ball out of the Cluj defence well, but then undoes all his his good work by running into Rafael.

Sougou, who has been smacked in the face twice, is replaced by Luis Alberto. Poor Sougou. Alberto came on as sub for Cluj at the weekend and got a goal, his first goal for the club. Can lightning strike twice?

Robin van Persie spins and shoots just wide of the Cluj goal. Close.

Evra clips Sougou with a strange challenge and the Cluj man is down again after taking a blow to the head.

Rooney shoots and forces a corner, which comes to nothing.

Kapetanos is furious that he's not found by a teammate as Cluj find the gaps like Spurs did on Saturday.

Cluj more confident since the goal. They are passing it around nicely now.

It's been all Man United but they've been hit by a sucker punch in Romania.

GOAL! KAPETANOS! Sougou skips down the right and crosses one in for Pantelis Kapetanos who sidefoots it into the corner. Poor defending again from United. 1-0 Cluj.

He's back on his feet.

Sougou takes one flush in the face from Anderson and is down. The ball hit him in the face if I didn't make it clear.

It's all Manchester United.

Rooney skips around a few challenges and rolls the ball into the path of Anderson who wastes the opportunity.

Darren Fletcher wins the ball back for United in midfield.

Tom Cleverley out to Hernandez on the left. The Mexican cuts in-field and curls a cross into the danger area, but Cluj deal with it without fuss.

Ferdinand blocks a cross and then Evans mops up with a clearing header. Rooney's attempted long ball on the counter is intercepted.

Rooney's dropping into midfield on every attack and he sprays a pass out to the wide right.

Ionut Rada wins the header again for Cluj, but that sails harmlessly wide.

Modou Sougou heads just wide from a Cluj corner and the Romanians have another flag kick.

Hernandez tries to link up with Rooney but the latter's pass is too strong and Cluj clear their lines.

Manchester United get us under way in their all white strip, with Cluj clad in claret with white flecks.

There's a big flag doing the rounds at Cluj. In fact, big doesn't do it justice. It's ginormous.

As for my correct score preditcion, I haven't got a Cluj. Don't worry, the game starts soon.

John Owens has his crystal ball out. He says: "United to win 6-1. Rooney to control the midfield from the front. Hernandez for a hatter."

Roy in Peacehaven is a Brighton fan. He says: "Hi Ben.With RVP,Rooney and Hernandez all up front,i hope to see a big score,,,anything else is the end of even thinking about silverware, both in Europe or the UK. Fergie is panicing now with what side to put in. What was his words pre season,,he wouldnt rotate the squad as that cost him the title last year.Tonight is all guns. I can only see goals, but no silverware."

RVP, Rooney and Javier Hernandez playing suggests a 4-3-3 here for United here doesn't it? We'll soon find out. 15 minutes to kick-off.

Dav Singh says: "Interesting team selection by SAF! Reckon Utd should win with that quality on the pitch but a little concerned about the lack of width as there are no natural wide players starting for united!! C'mon you reds!"

Most of you are predicting a 3-0 scoreline in Man United's favour. That's 11/1 at Sky Bet.

Dan Thomason is also predicting a comfortable night for United: "I reckon 3-0 utd. Rooney n rvp should tear these apart."

B Cartwright says: "So this is the team that beat the team that knocked Utd out last campaign. The Red Devils will want to get straight back on the horse and Rooney will want his name back in the first XI. So I can see a dominant utd performance, I'll even stretch as far as 3-0 with Rooney, RVP and Valencia all on target."

Jamie Whitter is predicting a joyous night for RVP. He says: "Robin van persie hatrick 3-0 win utd!"

Gabriel Sutton is considerably more talkative than JS. He says: "This a game that Ferguson has to get the squad rotation right. He needs a quick reaction from his players after their poor first half display against Tottenham at the weekend but Man U seem to be out of reliable options at centre-back. If he introduces Anderson for this one that should inject them with a bit of energy but even then I can see Cluj making a good game of this. 3-2 to Man United."

Jordan Stenner is a man of few words but I like him because he agrees with me. He says: "3-0 Red Devils."

If I was forced into a bet I think I'd be on the 7/4 about Man Utd winning to nil. I know the Chuckle Brothers could have defended better than Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans on Saturday but Cluj are no Spurs and Fergie will demand a clean sheet tonight.

Talking of RVP, our best buddies at Sky Bet have boosted his first goalscorer odds to 4/1. Check out all of the odds for the game right here.
