FULL-TIME: Group A is going to go down to the wire as Anzhi Makhachkala gain sweet revenge for defeat at Anfield with a slender 1-0 victory in Moscow. Lacina Traore bagged the only goal with the last kick of the opening 45 minutes with a cheeky turn past Sebastian Coates and sublime lob over the advancing Brad Jones. Although Liverpool kept possession well and created chances, they never looked like scoring an equaliser. The Reds next face Young Boys at home before a trip to Udinese in what could be a winner takes all clash.
One last chance for Liverpool as they pile forward in numbers and the ball into the box is headed on by Sebastian Coates and out for a goalkick.
90+2 SUBSTITUTION: Substitute Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez is himself being subbed by Shamil Lakhiyalov after picking up a knock.
Liverpool win a throw deep in Anzhi territory.
Three added minutes of stoppage time. Will we have another late goal?
Jon Flanagan picks out Jordan Henderson just inside the box, but the midfield man lifts his strike over the crossbar.
88 YELLOW CARD: Things go from bad to worse for Jonjo Shelvey as he's booked for a late tackle on Carcela.
Jonjo Shelvey's shot from the resulting free-kick is sliced badly wide of the target. Oh dear!
Assaidi wins his side a free-kick after being dragged down by Arseni Logashov.
Rasim Tagirbekov finds Fyodor Smolov and his low drive is easily held by Brad Jones.
Anzhi clear and counter with three against two, but Jucilei's effort is blocked by Jonjo Shelvey.
The clock is ticking and Liverpool are searching for that equaliser. Downing's cross is a good one from the left and they win a corner.
80 SUBSTITUTION: Fyodor Smolov replaces the goalscorer Lacina Traore.
WHAT A MISS!!! Lacina Traore is put clean through on goal, but the big man pulls his left-foot shot inches wide of the far post. Massive let off for the visitors!
78 SUBSTITUTION: That was Joe Cole's last touch becasue he's replaced by Oussama Assaidi.
CHANCE LIVERPOOL!!! Suso's shot is parried to Joe Cole, who can only hit keeper Georgi Gabulov from point-blank range.
WELL SAVED!!! Rasim Tagirbekov cross is headed towards goal by Lacina Traore, who is all alone six-yards out, but Brad Jones is in the right spot.
In the other game in Group A, Young Boys lead Udinese 1-0 in Italy.
Even Jamie Carragher is flying forward, but they have to watch the Anzhi break.
Yuri Zhirkov looks to get in behind Andre Wisdom, but the Reds clear.
Dani Pacheco brings down Arseni Logashov for a cheap free-kick.
Moubarak Boussoufa gifts Liverpool the ball back after a dangerous looking counter.
Anzhi look dangerous on the break, but it's Liverpool who have kept possession the better. And Rodgers is speaking with Oussama Assaidi, who may be coming on shortly.
Not liking the game Matthew? Good to see Joe Cole playing his best match for Liverpool though. That's been the high point for the visitors thus far. There is time for the equaliser. Can they get it?
Matthew Irwin Tweets: "Action? I haven't seen any in this game.....terrible."
Suso does so well collecting Flanagan's pass before he runs into trouble and is crowded out by a number of defenders when the through ball looked to be his best option.
Rodgers has made a couple of attacking changes in Dani Pacheco and Suso coming on and that should give Liverpool some hope.
65 YELLOW CARD: Jon Flanagan is booked for an arm in the face of Tagirbekov.
Alex Murdoch Tweets: "Same problem we've had all season, just lacked a finish, everything else has been spot on."
Rasim Tagirbekov picks up the ball on the edge of the area and looks for the far corner, but it's just wide.
61 SUBSTITUTIONS: Adam Morgan and Conor Coady are replaced by Dani Pacheco and Suso for Liverpool.
CLOSE!!! Lacina Traore is such a handful as he lashes his right-foot strike just wide of the target.
Samuel Eto'o looks to curl one around Jones, but the Reds shot-stopper is down on his knees to make the save.
Oussama Assaidi is warming up on the touchline for Liverpool.
Brad Jones is quickly out as the long ball over the top seeks Traore.
There is still time Alex and the Reds are playing well enough, but just haven't looked like hitting the back of the net.
Alex Murdoch Tweets: "Liverpool still with a chance going into the second half, I'd like to see Assaidi on, give us an attacking edge."
Not for long though, because Liverpool are back in possession and Adam Morgan's effort is blocked before Jonjo Shelvey miscues his shot.
Now Shelvey looks to help the ball on for Flanagan down the right, but he gives it away.
CHANCE LIVERPOOL!!! Joe Cole finds Adam Morgan and the youngster shots into the side netting from a tight angle. A bit ambitious to say the least.
Anzhi are looking sharpe in attack early in this half as Cody finds Flanagan for the Reds, looking to take the steam out of things.
David Fernandez Borbalan awards the home side a free-kick as Conor Coady brings down Lacina Traore.
Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez and Lacina Traore pressure Jamie Carragher into a hurried clearance.
Jonjo Shelvey looks to slide in the lively Joe Cole, who is caught in an offside position, but it was close on second inspection.
The second half is underway in Moscow and I wonder what Brendan Rodgers said to his players at the break. He must have been gutted after watching his side concede that late goal.
Don't forget, if you'd like to air your views during the second half, email Raz...that's me! at email@example.com or Tweet me: @RazMirza and I'll publish as many as I can.
Anzhi are now 1/4 to claim victory with @Skybet, who make Liverpool 16/1 and the draw 7/2. My prediction of an easy 3-0 home win is still on and is now priced at 8/1 down from 14/1. Head now to SKYBET to place your bets on this match.
HALF TIME: Liverpool's superb first half display is spoiled by a brilliant piece of individual skill by Lacina Traore with the last kick of the opening 45 minutes. Brendan Rodgers won't change his tactics too much as his side have kept the ball well and have created chances not least through Jordan Henderson. There is still hope for the men from Anfield!
A goal out of nothing for Anzhi, as Liverpool are undone by a superb piece of skill by the dangerous Traore. The tall striker brilliantly flicks the pass over Sebastian Coates before chipping Brad Jones. Absolutely superb individual goal from the man they call 'Gentle Giant'. That's four goals in his last six matches!
45+1 GOAL!!! LACINA TRAORE
Just one added minute of stoppage time in Moscow.
The Reds are back on the ball and Andre Wisdom's stunning cross is missed by a number of players. I don't think those Liverpool players were expecting him to deliver such a cracking cross!
Stewart Downing's inswinger is helped on by Joe Cole, but the ball drifts well wide of the target.
Joao Carlos fouls Joe Cole down the right and this is in a dangerous area as the big men come forward.
The Liverpool youngsters have done wonderfully well so far. They're looking calm and composed, which Brendan Rodgers will be delighted with.
Former England boss Fabio Capello is in the crowd watching on as Liverpool do well to close down Eto'o and then keep the ball.
Chris Samba blocks off Joe Cole and referee David Fernandez Borbalan waves play on. That was a non-contest!
Conor Coady looks to find Jon Flanagan with a long direct ball down the middle, but Flanagan just fails to reach the ball as Georgi Gabulov races out to collect.
The pressure is mounting from Anzhi as they quicken the pace and Liverpool need to stay firm right now as we approach half-time.
FINE SAVE!!! Andre Wisdom makes a rare error gifting the ball to Yuri Zhirkov and his left-wing cross finds Samuel Eto'o in space on the edge of the box. The former Barcelona man stays calm before firing his right-foot shot towards goal, but Brad Jones is equal to it.
Meanwhile, Joe Cole looks to find Adam Morgan, but he's well marked himself and loses possession.
Yuri Zhirkov races away down the left before turning back after seeing that Lacina Traore is well marked.
Liam Ferguson Tweets: "I reckon Liverpool could win this quite easily, depending if Suarez is on his goalscoring best, 1-0 or 2-0 to liverpool I think."
Soon after that change, Liverpool get into a defensive mix-up but Anzhi can't take advantage and the ball bobbles up in the air before Moubarak Boussoufa fires over.
29 SUBSTITUTION: Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez replaces the injured Odil Ahmedov for Anzhi.
Liverpool ahve cleverly set up in a 4-2-4 formation as Anzhi have the ball in possession and here comes the change.
Anzhi boss Guus Hiddink looks like he's getting ready to make an early substitution.
Jucilei makes a fine tackle to deny Joe Cole an opportunity to have a pop at goal at the other end.
At the other end Arseni Logashov looks for Moubarak Boussoufa, who breaks into the box, but Stewart Downing does well to clear away.
WHAT A CHANCE!!! Jon Flanagan collects Adam Morgan's pass and decides to try and play the ball back to Morgan rather than dink it over the onrushing keeper Georgi Gabulov. I think Flanagan rather panicked when he was put through there!
Paul Wright is back in touch and he says: "I heard he's (Eto'o) on £320,000 - disgusting! C'mon Liverpool - get to half time 0.0 then get a cheeky one in about 80th and we're laughing!"
Although Anzhi are playing a home match tonight, they're due to play an away match in the same Lokomotiv Stadium on the weekend against Lokomotiv Moscow in an away match. Weird hey!
Adam Morgan picks out Stewart Downing down the left, but his cross is blocked by Arseni Logashov.
The stadium if half full tonight, but the atmosphere is pretty lively.
Joe Cole is flattened by the huge Chris Samba and the playmaker just gets up and gets on with it.
Sebastian Coates is alert this time as he sees the pass from Samuel Eto'o and reads the situation.
Lacina Traore looks to cross the ball from a difficult position down the left, but Andre Wisdom holds his man off well and the ball is eventually sliced out of play.
Gav lar emails: "Seeing the team that Liverpool have fielded,I've backed a ht/ft in favour of anzhi.....easy money."
Replays show Zhirkov slipped and that was actually great work of defensive work by young Flanagan. The crowd were not happy, but play continues.
The men in yellow are back on the ball and in possession, but the pace of the game is slow, until Yuri Zhirkov looks to take the ball past Jon Flanagan and the winger is down injured now.
Close to £300,000 if you believe some reports Paul! He's playing as a more withdrawn striker now. He was in the defensive part of the halfway line just a few moments ago. Can't really call him a striker can you?
Paul Wright emails: "Samuel Eto'o was once a great player - but c'mon how much money is he on? No player is worth that!"
Guus Hiddink and Joe Cole celebrate their birthdays today! Which of them will be celebrating tonight I wonder?
Jordan Henderson gifts the home team a free-kick in the middle of the park.
The cross by Downing evades a number of players, but this is proving to be a very spirited start from the men from Merseyside.
Jon Flanagan works hard to win the ball and now he finds Downing down the left.
Yosef TekleHaymanot þTweets: "Today I hope we can see a good game and the yongsters have a chance to prove them selves, but in jan... We need striker."
Lacina Traore is off again in search of a through ball, but Jones is out like a shot to collect.
The atmosphere is certainly better than I thought it would be as Samuel Eto'o looks to find the lanky Lacina Traore, but the ball fizzes away off the ground and out for a goalkick.
Yuri Zhirkov picks out Rasim Tagirbekov and his attempted cross-cum-shot is easily collected by Brad Jones in the Reds goal tonight.
Certainly a cautious start from both teams as Adam Morgan looks to close down the opposition.
I think I'll happily stick with Anzhi for the rest of this match Dylan. Liverpool have started pretty comfortably, holding possession of the ball.
Dylan Herholdt Tweets: "Say 'Anzhi Makhachkala' 10 times over as fast as you can... "
Liverpool are in their dark away kit with white trim, while Anzhi are wearing an all yellow kit reminiscent of the Reds away strip from the 80's.
The referee from Spain David Fernandez Borbalan gets the game underway. The pitch is in pretty good condition considering the temperature.
Paul Wright emails in to say: "I hope Brendan knows what he's doing - such a young team! Let's hope Liverpool don't repeat Man U's quick exit out of Europe from last year!"
The stadium is well represented by Anzhi supporters in very cold temperatures as you would expect for this time of the year in Moscow with a splattering of Liverpool fans who have made the long trip.
Daniel Burton says: "Hi Raz. Tough game for us Redmen tonight, but to be fair, I think the youngsters bought in have performed really well this year. Having said that, Anzhi will be a tough nut to crack, and i'm hoping Liverpool find some form in the final third as not sure our defence will keep them out. Sneaking suspicion Morgan will be really revved up to prove his worth of a place in the prem side, and predict a 2-1 win for the reds."
Chris in Belfast emails in to say: "Raza be very surprised if Liverpool get anything from this game. It's tough enough for full strength team to go to Russia and get a result than a second string team that on paper looks very average."
In fact, Liverpool have only lost twice in their last 22 European games!
Anzhi have travelled 991 miles from Makhachkala to Moscow to play tonight's game but the omens are with Liverpool who have lost just one of their last 10 away games in Europe and that was in Braga back in March 2011.
Don't forget fans, if you'd like to air your views before or during the match, email Raz...that's me! at firstname.lastname@example.org or Tweet me: @RazMirza and I'll publish as many as I can.
The Merseyside outfit head into the contest with a two-point lead over their Russian opponents and Italian outfit Udinese, while Young Boys occupy the bottom spot in the standings with just three points. A victory at the Lokomotiv Stadium would virtually guarantee Liverpool's place in the knockout stage. Anzhi, meanwhile, who are second in Group A with four points, could go above Liverpool with a victory and with the Reds lining up with such a young side, you would have to fancy Anzhi.
Razeen Boomgaard Tweets: "This tells you how badly we need to buy in Jan ... No depth in our squad at all. Henderson is a waste of time. Useless!"
Nick Watt Tweets: "Would much rather see Assaidi & Pacheco out there then Downing & Cole. Why not give the youth a chance rather than deadwood?" Downing did score the winner against Anzhi at Anfield Nick, although you could be right about Joe Cole. He hasn't impressed Brendan Rodgers at all has he!
Anzhi are 5/6 to claim victory with @Skybet, who make Liverpool 16/5 and the draw 13/5. Samuel Eto'o to score first and either Anzhi Makhachkala to win 2-1 or Anzhi Makhachkala to win 3-1 is a nice 14/1 while Lacina Traore to score first is 5/1. Jonjo Shelvey to score first is 12/1 while Stewart Downing to score first and Liverpool to win 1-0 is a huge 105/1. Because the Reds have made so many changes for this match. I'm hedging my bets and going for an easy 3-0 home win, which is priced at 14/1. Head now to SKYBET to place your bets on this match.
Anzhi boss Guus Hiddink, who will attend the match despite missing the press conference due to the death of a friend picks forward Lacina Traore, scorer of three goals in his last five matches. He returns to the starting line-up after coming on as a substitute at Anfield.
Teenage midfielder Conor Coady is handed his debut by Reds boss Brendan Rodgers. The 19-year-old is one of seven changes from the team which beat the Russian side a fortnight ago, with striker Adam Morgan, 18, making only his second start up front.
ANZHI MAKHACHKALA: Georgi Gabulov, Logashov, Samba, Joao Carlos, Tagirbekov, Ahmedov, Jucilei, Zhirkov, Eto'o, Boussoufa, Traore.
