Tom Cleverley's winning goal sees Manchester United through in a throughly entertaining game with Newcastle, who had chances aplenty to rescue the game or even produce victory at Old Trafford. Thanks for your company and I'll see you all soon.
FULL TIME. Manchester United 2 Newcastle United 1
Ferguson crosses in from the left but it's a poor cross, and despite Cisse's best efforts to create space for himself, it's a Man United goal kick.
Four minutes of added time to be played.
Booking for Bigirimimana as the midfielder trying to intercept Man United's passing with a rough challenge on Welbeck.
United continue to attack but it's slightly laboured as they now look to hold up the ball with some neat passing from the hosts' midfield.
Anderson spreads the ball to Hernandez, doing well to control it initially but incredibly it's Cisse who travels back to dispossess the Mexican and win back the ball for Newcastle.
Brady's first touch is a good one, but Cleverley is dispossessed and Newcastle attack with Gosling poking straight into De Gea's arms when the goal was gaping.
Man United make their final sub as Buttner comes off for Brady.
Keane takes a knock in a crunching tackle with Obertan while Buttner is also down as receives treatment from the medics.
This really has been a terrific game despite both teams' weakedned sides and don't rule out a grandstand finale here as both teams continue to threaten in their opponents' final thirds.
Cisse hits the bar! The striker shows his unpredictablility and class as he creates a chance for himself before unleashing an overhead kick that rattles the woodwork.
Ameobi fumes as he claims a corner off Keane and the striker is right to fume as replays show Man United are let off the hook there.
A link-up between Powell and Cleverley is scuppered, with Gosling taking play forward for Newcastle as Wootton clears away Obertan's delivery.
Cisse looks to power his way through Man United's back-line, with Tunnicliffe immediately called into play to clear the hosts' lines.
A double change now for Man United as Rooney comes off for Powell and Vermijl is replaced by Tunnicliffe.
Bigirimana looks for Ferguson but his control isn't the best and Man United win a throw-in on the right side.
Buttner looks for Welbeck but Perch beats the striker to the punch. Moments later, Gosling goes for goal and is incredible close to levelling the scores. A wonderful effort from the midfielder.
A wonderful battle between Buttner and Obertan results in a Newcastle throw-in. Tavernier takes but Rooney ends up taking control and the hosts break before Hernandez's interesting ball ends up behind goal.
Tiote makes way for Newcastle with Bigirimana the man coming on in his place for Newcastle.
Rooney's corner isn't seized upon by Newcastle's defence and Vermijl is nearly presented with a tap-in before Ferguson desperately clears.
Anderson + another vicious shot on goal = a corner.
Vermijl, who has really picked up his game since the break, gets to the byline and hangs a cross that has everyone ready to pounce in the box but ends up landing on the roof of the goal.
Ferguson again charges forward with intent down the left, and his cross is fumbled by De Gea before Keane clears up the goalkeeper's mess.
Hernandez hits the bar! The striker does brilliantly to poke the ball past Elliot and from a very tricky angle he does brilliantly to even hit the target. Very unlucky for the Mexican.
A neat touch from Fletcher ensures Man United continue a well-worked attack, but the final touch from Welbeck allows Williamson to step in and intercept.
Newcastle looks far more adventurous now as Perch presses down the right and does well to win a throw-in off Buttner.
The two subs combine to immediate effect! Ferguson delivers a peach of a cross from the left and Cisse, unmarked, slips in to draw Newcastle level from close range. 2-1 to Man United and game on!
GOAL FOR NEWCASTLE - CISSE!
A double swap for the Magpies as Coloccini is replaced by Ferguson and Vuckic comes off for Cisse.
Buttner goes for the ridiculous from 30 yards, the ball eventually falling to Rooney's, whose unbelievable drive from range misses the top right corner by a whisker.
In the build-up to that goal, a foul from Tiote earned him a retrospective yellow card.
It's another terrific goal from the hosts but this time it's a free-flowing move on the edge of Newcastle's box that results in Cleverley getting the shot away - a precise finish past Elliot and his first goal for the Red Devils. 2-0 to Man United!
GOAL FOR MAN UNITED - CLEVERLEY!
It's still all Newcastle for the time being, with Ameobi looking for Gosling but Wootton ensures the midfielder can't meet his team-mate's delivery.
Tavernier capitalises on a poor Keane pass, but momentum is lost when his ball out to Marveuax makes the midfielder work much harder than he would have liked. In the end Buttner does well to win back possession from Tiote.
Newcastle come close again! Vuckic turns past Keane and curls an effort towards the far post which is inches away from drawing the Magpies level.
A really good move from Newcastle involving Ameobi and Marveaux results in the latter firing from a tight corner and a proceeding goal kick. Newcastle's intent has been terrific from the off off this second half.
Good work from Ameobi, who turns and shoots from 20 yards but it doesn't carry enough sting to really trouble De Gea.
A Newcastle corner nearly causes carnage as Vuckic goes flying before Williamson's header bounces over the bar. A close shave for the hosts there.
Rooney and Vermijl link up skillfully, the latter then whipping the ball into the near post with Hernandez poking wide from a tough angle.
Perch swings in a cross at the far post to Ameobi but Keane defends well. The hosts then break with intent but Anderson can't provide the finishing touch as he scuffs his shot well wide.
Vermijl looks for Hernadez with a neat ball down the right. The striker then launches his cross into the box as Williamson does well to beat Welbeck to the ball.
Man United get the gam restarted.
Gabriel Sutton writes: "Whilst United have had the better of the half and deserve their lead, you can't help feeling that Fergie's inexperience choice of players at the back could cost them in this game- Vermijl has been less than convincing. Think Newcastle will score in the second half and threaten to take it to extra time but maybe a goal from Rooney will be enough to clinch it."
A delighted Gareth Cox writes: "Great first half for the spectators. Quality goal by Anderson, he has been by far the best player for Utd this game. 3-0 Utd!"
Anderson's wonderful goal is the difference at the break. Can Newcastle pull themselves back into it or do you think the game is now Man United's for the taking? Send your e-mails to email@example.com or tweet me @JWoodfield365
HALF TIME. Manchester United 1 Newcastle United 0
One minute of added time to be played.
What a goal. Anderson makes his second storming run of the game and this time caps it off with an outstanding finish. 1-0 Man United!
GOAL FOR MAN UNITED - ANDERSON!
Rooney's terrific hussling results in Man Utd possession after an interception from Tavernier. He's been simply awesome so far.
Vuckic is struggling right now and things go against him once more as he is pulled up for tugging on Keane's shirt in the box.
Buttner advances forward but can't find Hernandez as Perch throws his body in the way. Vermijl again makes a pretty poor bluder then as he looks to volley into the box and ends up clearing the ball out of play.
Coloccini's header goes for a second corner but Marveaux's second delivery asks a lot of the centre-back and the ball ends up bobbling out for a corner.
Ameobi's close control results in a Newcastle corner and the visitors have looked dangerous from set pieces so far.
Rooney is running the show in that hole he plays in, but Vermijl shows a little inexperience as Tavernier knocks him off the ball and ends up winning a goal kick.
What a chance! Hernandez is excellent as he skips past Tavernier, picking the ball up again from Welbeck being playing in Cleverley, who practically has an open goal, and ends up firing wide. A horrible miss and his second of the month.
Gosling is the man to concede posssession far too easily this time, with the hosts looking to press until the midfielder makes amends and wins a free-kick off Fletcher.
Obertan completely overcooks his ball into Vuckic, the striker left no chance of controlling it as De Gea gratefully intercepts a Newcastle counter attack.
Keane carelessly gives the ball away to Tiote, but no harm comes of it as Vermijl wins it back from Marveaux to spare his team-mate's blushes.
Obertan does well to skip past Buttner but he can't find a team-mate with his delivery and Wootton makes the clearance for the hosts.
Newcastle again clear the corner with ease, but it's Man United on the ball again, with Vermijl's drive into the box incredibly avoiding contact with everyone.
Elliot's palms are tested once more as Rooney's outstanding vision finds Welbeck, who cuts inside Perch and fires a rocket at goal that goes for a corner.
Tiote shows his class once more as Elliot's clearance lands dangerously close to Hernadez, the midfielder calmly chesting the ball down and playing it on.
De Gea confidently claims a free-kick into the box after Tavernier had been felled on the left side by Welbeck.
Tavernier comes close this time, the Newcastle full-back making a cutting run across the penalty area before stabbing an effort at goal which has De Gea scrambling but it's comfortably wide in the end.
Rooney is covering a tremendous amount of ground to get involved in the play, with Newcastle doing a good job of restricting any space in their half for the time being.
Cleverley links up a good number of passes before Obertan tracks back admirably to slide in on Buttner, preventing the left-back's cross being delivered.
Rooney catches the run of Hernandez, playing a delicate chip into the box which his striker partner attempts to volley but ends up completely miscuing.
Rooney nips the ball through Gosling's legs before trying a drive from range which clips Coloccini's heels and deflects clear. The nutmeg was completely brilliant.
Tiote battles his way past Welbeck to retrieve possession excellently. A simply wonderful player on his day.
Marveaux launches it long, but Rooney is back showing his defensive attributes as he wins the leap for the ball against Vuckic.
Newcastle clear through Williamson, before the visitors then win a free-kick in the centre of the park through Tiote.
Anderson shows brilliance with a sublime run through Newcastle's defence, before driving at goal with Elliot tipping it round for a corner.
Rooney looks for the penalty in a collision with Tavernier but despite the striker's best protests, no referee in the world would surely have given that.
Coloccini shows good strength against Fletcher, with Newcastle advancing as a result, which sees Gosling blaze a wonderful chance with a volley inside the penalty area. Newcastle should undoubtedly be ahead.
Ameobi holds up play in the channel very well before looking for his strike partner, but Vuckic is caught offside running on to Ameobi's pass.
Coloccini is lively from a Newcastle corner this time, but Rooney ends up breaking up the attack, with a counter-attack cut out thanks to Perch.
Marveaux's free-kick is won by Coloccini but the defender is ajudged to have committed a foul in the six-yard box and a free-kick is awarded to Man Utd.
Buttner looks over the top for Hernandez, whose run was superb as ever, but the pace carries it past the striker as Elliot sees it out of play.
Williamson nods a header into the six-yard box from a free-kick but Keane calmly clears for the hosts. The youngster looks extremely composed early on here.
Former Man United man Obertan looks to get involved down the right, but Newcastle are pushed back until Keane dispossesses Ameobi.
Neat control from Welbeck on the left, as Man United look to enforce themselves with Hernandez coming close, his glancing header from Vermijl's delivery drifting narrowly wide.
Buttner has a go after Williamson heads away Rooney's ball upfield, but it's a speculative effort and it ends up with the fans behind goal.
Rooney gets his first touch in a knock down for Anderson, with Man United controlling possession in the early exchanges.
Newcastle kick off and get this cup tie underway.
The man in the middle for tonight's game is Anthony Taylor (Cheshire).
