FT: Newcastle 1 Norwich 0

The full-time whistle goes and Newcastle have emerged triumphant, but it has been a tough battle and Norwich can hold their heads high despite the 1-0 defeat which leaves them still without a win this season.

90+3
Newcastle are really struggling to hold on to the ball at the moment and Norwich are pressing hard, but they have not carved out many clear-cut openings and it looks like the home team will cling on for three points.

90+1
A promising Newcastle counter-attack is stopped in its tracks as Gabriel Obertan is clattered into, much to the frustration of the Magpies bench.

90
Steve Harper is quickly off his line once again to deny Simeon Jackson from a tight angle, as four minutes of stoppage time are signalled.

88
Cheick Tiote is now cautioned after jumping into Grant Holt, and it has to be said the Newcastle man has looked decidedly angry ever since he came on to the pitch.

87
Jonny Howson picks up a yellow card after a wild challenge on Cheick Tiote, who had been trying to dribble his way out of defence for the second time in as many minutes.

86
James Perch has to sprint back to cut out a Grant Holt cross after Cheick Tiote lost position in an advanced area to give Norwich the chance to break.

84
Hatem Ben Arfa has produced another sparkling display but his work is done for the day as he comes off for the final few minutes, replaced by Shola Ameobi.

82
The ball is slipped through to Demba Ba as Leon Barnett loses his footing, but the Norwich defender recovers quickly enough to put the pressure on the Newcastle striker and his shot from the edge of the area is safely held by John Ruddy.

81
Simoen Jackson will have around ten minutes to make an important contribution after being summoned from the bench to replace Andrew Surman.

79
Russell Martin seeks out Grant Holt with a cross from the right but it just curls away too much and allows Steven Taylor to get his head to the ball first.

78
There is tension around the ground as the clock ticks down, with Norwich still carrying an attacking threat and desperate to find an equaliser.

76
Cheick Tiote is given a warm welcome as Alan Pardew brings on the midfielder in place of Vurnon Anita, allowing James Perch to revert to right-back.

74
Gabriel Obertan looks determined to make an impact but there is no way past Norwich's defence on this occasion.

72
Leon Barnett tackles Demba Ba and sets Norwich on the attack, but Jonas Gutierrez is very disciplined when it comes to fulfilling his defensive duties and blocks Russell Martin's cross.

70
Norwich have also decided to make a change, replacing Steve Morison with Grant Holt.

69
That will be Papiss Cisse'a last act of the day, but he is given a decent round of applause as he makes way for Gabriel Obertan.

67
Papiss Cisse is starting to look frustrated now, as he heads horribly over the crossbar following a beautifully flighted left-wing cross from Vurnon Anita.

65
There is some concern following a clash of heads between James Perch and Robert Snodgrass, with the Newcastle man visibly groggy as the physios come on to check their wellbeing. It looks like both players will be fine to continue.

63
John Ruddy pulls off a routine save from Mike Williamson's header as Newcastle strive to double their advantage.

62
Vurnon Anita picks out Hatem Ben Arfa with an outswinging cross but for once the Frenchman's touch lets him down under pressure from Leon Barnett.

61
It is just not happening for Papiss Cisse, who is played in by a fantastic pass from James Perch but cannot get his shot from a tight angle past John Ruddy.

60
Steve Morison tries his luck with an ambitious volley from distance that flies wide of Steve Harper's right-hand post.

58
Having started the second half slowly, Newcastle now appear to be taking control and Hatem Ben Arfa is mesmerising to watch as he teases Javier Garrido one way and then the other before digging out a cross.

56
Steven Taylor is unmarked in the area but cannot take advantage as he heads Yohan Cabaye's corner wide from close range.

55
Hatem Ben Arfa steps in off the right wing and, ignoring the decoy run of Vurnon Anita, smashes a low effort towards the corner of the goal which forces John Ruddy into a fine save down to his left.

53
Michael Turner gets his head on Robert Snodgrass' corner and Davide Santon decides to take no chances with his clearance, even though the ball appeared to be drifting just wide.

52
Norwich enjoy a period of sustained possession and probe down the left wing before cutting the ball back in for Robert Snodgrass, whose shot is deflected wide.

50
Yohan Cabaye delivers a looping free-kick from just inside the Norwich half and Mike Williamson is the obvious target. The big defender attacks the ball and crashes a powerful header narrowly wide of the post.

48
Wes Hoolahan threads a lovely ball forward for Andrew Surman but the chance goes begging as Steve Harper rushes quickly off his line to smother the shot with a fine save.

47
Hatem Ben Arfa dwells on the ball for a moment too long and is smartly dispossessed by Bradley Johnson in midfield.

46
Norwich get the second half started. There have been no further changes at the interval and Chris Hughton will still be confident that his side can battle back for a draw at least.

The half-time whistle goes and Newcastle have a slender 1-0 advantage. They could have been in complete control if Papiss Cisse had scored from the spot, but Norwich have competed well and will feel they are still in with a chance of taking something from this game.

45+1
MISSED Papiss Cisse steps up in a bid to get his first Premier League goal of the season, but he has looked short of confidence all afternoon and that is an awful penalty. The striker does not even make John Ruddy work as he blasts his spot-kick high over the crossbar and possibly into orbit.

45
PENALTY Referee Neil Swarbrick has no hesitation in pointing to the spot following an aerial challenge between Steve Morison and Mike Williamson. Norwich's players look stunned, but replays show that was a clear nudge in the back from Morison and a correct decision.

44
Andrew Surman looks like he feels aggrieved as he concedes a free-kick in the Newcastle area following a tangle with Vurnon Anita.

42
Demba Ba takes up a position just on the shoulder of his defender and nearly latches on to a long pass from Yohan Cabaye, but is not quite able to bring the ball under control.

41
Davide Santon has not been afraid to take on Russell Martin and has got the better of him on a few occasions, but his touch is just too heavy here and Norwich win a free-kick.

39
Hatem Ben Arfa cheekily nutmegs Andrew Surman and embarks on a typically exciting run to the edge of the box, but Demba Ba is not quite on the same wavelength as he attempts an ambitious pass.

38
Steven Taylor makes an important block following another menacing run and cross from Wes Hoolahan.

36
James Perch has made a big difference since being pushed into midfield, breaking up opposition attacks and distributing possession sensibly.

34
Norwich relieve the pressure with a fast break but Steve Harper has looked assured in goal so far and comes out to pluck a cross out of the air and avert the danger.

32
Davide Santon sends in a cross from the left which Papiss Cisse cannot connect with properly. The ball breaks for Yohan Cabaye, but his rising shot flies off target.

31
Newcastle are displaying a greater sense of urgency now, with Vurnon Anita getting forward well down the right and delivering some dangerous crosses.

29
Vurnon Anita drives forward and digs out a cross towards Papiss Cisse at the far post, but Leon Barnett stays with his man to get a head on the ball and give away a corner.

27
Javier Garrido concedes a free-kick out wide following a clumsy foul but Yohan Cabaye's free-kick is well dealt with by Norwich.

25
Mike Williamson has been a rock in the heart of Newcastle's defence and he comes to the rescue again as he clears off the line following a firm header by Robert Snodgrass.

23
Norwich look a little rattled and Chris Hughton will be urging them to regroup, having made such a positive start before Newcastle opened the scoring.

21
That goal has really lifted the crowd and the Newcastle players suddenly look full of confidence as well, passing the ball around with much more purpose.

19
GOAL! Newcastle take the lead against the run of play and it is Demba Ba yet again, with the striker timing his run through the middle to perfection to beat the offside trap and control Hatem Ben Arfa's excellent pass. He then slots calmly past John Ruddy from the edge of the area to leave Norwich trailing.

18
Newcastle certainly need to get hold of the ball a bit more as they seem a bit flat at the moment and Norwich are building up a head of steam.

17
Alan Pardew has decided to make a tactical switch in midfield and has pushed James Perch into the centre alongside Yohan Cabaye, with Vurnon Anita reverting to right-back.

16
Hatem Ben Arfa does a lot of things to get the crowd going but on this occasion it is his defensive work that earns a round of applause as he tracks back to dispossess Robert Snodgrass.

15
Norwich win a free-kick in a decent position out wide but Robert Snodgrass fails to get enough elevation on his delivery and it does not beat the first man, Papiss Cisse.

13
Norwich are really applying the pressure at the moment and Mike Williamson is required to make another couple of interceptions in quick succession, while Steve Harper also rushes off his line to get his fist to a corner.

11
Mike Williamson shows his aerial strength to beat Steve Morison to Russell Martin's high ball and head it out to safety.

10
Hatem Ben Arfa combines nicely with Demba Ba as Newcastle try to break quickly and Jonas Gutierrez is released down the left, but his cross is poor and easily cleared.

8
Sebastien Bassong's afternoon is cut cruelly short by injury against his former club and, after he hobbles off, Michael Turner quickly has to get himself ready to come on.

6
Sebastien Bassong stays down after trying to stretch for the corner and is left shaking his head, perhaps in resignation, as the physio comes on to administer treatment.

5
Javier Garrido delivers a delightful cross from the left wing and Wes Hoolahan's header takes a deflection before trickling agonisingly wide, with Steve Harper completely stranded.

4
A long ball is pumped forward for Steve Morison to chase but Mike Williamson gets across quickly to boot it into the stands in no-nonsense style.

3
Newcastle are enjoying most of the early possession as both sides try and settle into their stride without taking too many risks.

2
Davide Santon skips down the left wing as Newcastle start brightly but his cross is cleared by former Magpies defender Sebastien Bassong.

1
Newcastle get the game started and let us hope for an exciting encounter full of attacking play.

14.58
The players are greeted by generous applause as they enter the pitch, some of which is surely being aimed in the direction of Norwich boss Chris Hughton. The former Newcastle boss smiles and shakes the hands of his ex-colleagues before taking his place just down the touchline in the away dugout.

14.55
John Mattison says: "Newcastle to win. Ben Arfa is easily one of the top 10 midfielders in the Premiership at the moment and with the firepower Newcastle have upfront with Ba and Cisse and the creativity of Cabaye, it's only a matter of time before it clicks and becomes lethal."

14.48
James Wallbridge says: "I'm expecting a win for Newcastle, it will be a tough game but with Demba Ba back on form and just Cisse to get back on form, I think the Toon will prove too strong for Norwich. I'm going for a 5-1 win to Newcastle, Ba with a hat-trick, Cisse and Ben Arfa both getting on the score sheet. Snodgrass with a consolation. Come on the Toon!!!!"

14.40
Tony Mallon writes: "I fully expect Cisse to break his duck today, not having scored since the belter at the Bridge, and Newcastle to win comfortably - 5-0."

14.35
Chris Moutter says: "Newcastle at home will win this one 4-0. Demba Ba will show the fans he's at Newcastle United now and score two goals. Ben Arfa the stand out player with the other two goals."

Newcastle: Harper, Perch, Williamson, Steven Taylor, Santon, Ben Arfa, Anita, Cabaye, Gutierrez, Cisse, Ba. Subs: Elliot, Bigirimana, Shola Ameobi, Tiote, Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Tavernier.

Norwich: Ruddy, Russell Martin, Barnett, Bassong, Garrido, Snodgrass, Howson, Johnson, Surman, Hoolahan, Morison. Subs: Bunn, Turner, Holt, Jackson, Pilkington, Ryan Bennett, Tettey.

14.31
Apart from Demba Ba, Alan Pardew has made six other changes to the side which drew 0-0 against Maritimo in midweek, with Steve Harper, Yohan Cabaye, Vurnon Anita, Jonas Gutierrez, Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse all coming in. Chris Hughton has made just two changes to his Norwich team as Wes Hoolahan and Steve Morison replace Simeon Jackson and Grant Holt.

14.29
Jonny Tindle writes: "I think it's going to be a difficult game for Newcastle today. Our back four played in Madeira so I'm a bit concerned about fatigue but I think Cabaye and Ben Arfa's creativity is going to be vital today to break Norwich's defence down. Hopefully Cisse will get his season up and running today with a goal or two. Come on Newcastle!!"

14.27
Sophie is the first to get in touch, saying: "Hope Newcastle win this game. Haven't done too well in their last matches but I think they can win this game, score will be 2-0 to Newcastle with Ba scoring both of them. Good Luck boys!!!"

14.22
Demba Ba's representative had a few words to say after the striker started Monday's draw against Everton on the bench, suggesting he may have to consider his future if he continued to be left out of the first XI. Pardew has since received an apology and, after Ba scored twice to rescue a point at Goodison Park, it is no surprise to see that he has been restored to the starting XI. Whether he will be asked to play from the left or operate alongside Papiss Cisse up front, however, remains to be seen.

Can Chris Hughton's inside knowledge help Norwich pick up their first win of the season or will Newcastle prove too strong? The full team news will be in shortly but who do you think are likely to be the key players?

14.10
Norwich have failed to win in the league so far this season but have bounced back from a crushing opening-day defeat by Fulham to pick up three straight draws. Newcastle are just a couple of points better off but boss Alan Pardew felt their 2-2 draw with Everton on Monday could be a 'massive' result for his side and he will now be keen to return to winning ways.

14.05
Welcome to our minute-by-minute commentary of the Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Norwich City. The game marks Chris Hughton's first return to Tyneside since he was sacked as manager by the Magpies in December 2010. He was a hugely popular figure with the Toon Army and is expected to receive a warm reception ahead of kick-off, but he is now in charge of Norwich and will be looking to come away with three points to help kick-start their season.
