FT: Southampton 2 Newcastle 0

Southampton 2 Newcastle 0. Saints pick up back-to-back wins to clamber out of the drop zone. A clean sheet will also please Adkins, whose side controlled this contest from start to finish.

Final moments and Newcastle offer one final push. Taylor sees a clearance charged down by Cork. Williamson on hand to keep Lallana at bay.

Santon still looking to get forward, but Southampton have so many bodies behind the ball he has to go sideways. Gutierrez then surrenders possession.

Final changes of the afternoon see Perch enter the fold for Newcastle. For the Saints, Hooiveld replaces Shaw.

Newcastle appear to have run out of steam, with Marveaux lumping the ball forward more in hope than expectation. Southampton not sitting back, they want more.

Four minutes of stoppage time to be played.

Rodriguz call was a close one. Could have been six on another day for the Saints. Newcastle just haven't been at the races. As I speak, Cisse cuts across the edge of the box and curls inches past the post. Where has that been all afternoon?

Gutierrez down and he can't keep the ball in play. He staggers back to his feet. Not been Newcastle's day. Southampton come again, racing into open field. Rodriguez puts the ball into the back of net, but the flag goes up.

Santon wih a burst of pace which takes him past Puncheon. Clyne is backing up to put in a challenge. Southampton determined to collect a clean sheet.

Gutierrez caught on the ball, but Puncheon can't roll the ball into open field for Rodriguez. Newcastle look to spring clear, but the ball ends up out of play for a Southampton throw.

Tiote the next to have his name taken. Newcastle want the final whistle now.

Ameobi witha heavy first touch in a dangerous position. The Saints are quick to pounce, with Lallana sent in on goal. He looks to fire across Krul, but sees his effort saved by the Newcastle keeper's feet.

Newcastle in a rush to get the game going again as the ball runs behind. In fairness, they need a miracle. One goal, though, would offer hope and set up a grandstand finish.

Newcastle look ragged at the moment. Krul slices a clearance up into the air. He gets away with it, but the Saints are on the ball. They will keep it as Ba concedes another free-kick. Newcastle's strikers have been very generous this afternoon.

Another risky back-pass from Newcastle, this time from Newcastle. Rodriguez chases Krul down, but the Newcastle keeper is able to launch clear. Cisse then concedes a free-kick for climbing on his man.

Gutierrez able to hang a cross to the back post. Taylor is well forward, but can't get himself on the end of the delivery. He isn't best pleased with Ba for getting in his way.

Could have been three. Nice football from the Saints in and around the box. Another brilliant pass from Lallana frees Davis. His effort from a tight angle is pushed behind by Krul. The resulting corner finds the head of Fonte, who nods off the crossbar. The Saints could be well clear by now.

Ameobi gives away a needless free-kick inside his own half. Newcastle fans not happy with referee Atkinson, They are gifted the ball back though as Lallana swings the set-piece out of play.

Steven Davis on in place of Ramirez. He has had a great game this afternoon. Davis should help to keep things tight.

Nice run from Marveaux right at the heart of the Southampton defence. He is eventually crowded out. Rodriguez is able to run the ball away for the Saints.

Standing ovation for Lambert as he makes his way slowly from the field. Rodriguez sent on in his place. Like-for-like swap by Adkins.

Puncheon not as good going backwards as he is going forwards. He trips Santon on this occasion, offering Newcastle the chance to whip the ball intop the box from wide on their left. Ba gets a touch to the delivery, but the ball drops to a relieved red shirt.

Lallana prepared to chase after his own header. Krul more alive to the danger than his centre-halves, and he is able to come and claim.

Magpies knocking on the door and Gazzaniga has to produce a smart reflex save down to his right to keep out a powerful header from Santon. Newcastle thought they were back in it. UP at the other end, Ramirez down in the box again. Again nothing given.

Ba can't win a header against Clyne. Simpson tries again. This time he finds the head of Cisse, who is able to touch on. But the ball is cleared.

Southampton fully in control of this contest. Newcastle have been lacking in ideas all afternoon. Pardew needs to do something to halt their slump before he finds himself under pressure.

Southampton hit the woodwork again. Puncheon this time. Quality again from the Saints, with Lallana feeding a reverse pass into Puncheon. He looks to beat Krul at his near post, but strikes the base of the post.

Ramirez cautioned for kicking the ball away.

Better from Santon as he is able to keep Puncheon at bay. Teh Newcastle is then shoved in the back and goes down. Needless from Puncheon as the Magpies were boxed in.

Flag up again against Cisse. Lost count of the amount of times he has been caught offside. No need as he is looking right along the line. Southampton playing a high line and getting things spot on so far.

Fonte with another towering header to clear the Southampton lines. He as been rock solid today. He is required again now as Tiote dances into the box. He takes a shot, but lofts the ball over the top.

Marveaux on for Newcastle in place of Anita.

Having seen the Ramirez incident again. Tiote does hang out a leg and the Saints winger goes down. Not a lot of contact in truth.

Ramirez goes down inside the box, but is waved to his feet. He cut across his man and took a tumble. Maybe he went down too easily. If so, he should have stayed on his feet because he had room to have a shot.

Cisse able to force a corner. Anita takes for Newcastle. Delivery lets the Magpies down again. The ball ends up near the penalty spot, while everyone in black and white had piled into the six-yard box.

Aimless again from Simpson as he fires a long ball down the right towards nobody. Southampton fans in full voice now, they sense their side are closing in on back-to-back victories in the league.

Cisse looking to twist and turn inside the box, searching for a yard of space. There isn't one there, but he shoots anyway. His effort is blocked by Yoshida.

Disappointing end product once again from the Magpies. Ameobi able to get down the left flank, but he can't keep a cross on the field of play. Pardew on the touchline barking orders at his players.

That could be game over now. Newcastle were enjoying a decent spell, but they haven't really looked like scoring. Pardew left with plenty to contemplate.

GOAL SOUTHAMPTON - RAMIREZ. Breathing space for the hosts as they double their lead. Puncheon involved again, playing a one-two with Lallana. His low cross is spilled by Krul to the feet of Ramirez, who can't miss from seven yards out.

Ramirez causing problems again. This time he gets to the dead-ball line, with Williamson wary of diving into a tackle. Ramirez is able to force the ball across goal, but only into the grateful arms of Krul.

Schneiderlin catches Cisse, free-kick to Newcastle. The Magpies work a yard of space for Simpson. His cross is terrible and sails out of play on the far side. What a waste.

Nice touch and turn in the middle of the park from Ameobi. He can't find Ba with a slide-rule pass. Ramirez leads a Saints counter. He lays off to Puncheon, who in turn finds Lallana. His effort is beaten away by Krul, who also stops Puncheon's follow-up.

Shaw tries his best to keep the ball in play, but fails. The rain continues to lash down here. Cedit to the players for making this contest as entertaining as it has been.

Anita should have levelled. He is sprung into space by Cisse and races clear on goal. He drills low across Gazzaniga, but his effort is not the best and far too close to the Saints keeper.

Newcastle looking to play their way out from the back, Southampton not letting them. Lallana crunches into a challenge on Tiote. Home crowd enjoyed that.

Lambert looks to be okay to continue. As he rejoins the action, Anita is able to dart to the dead-ball line. His low cross is bundled behind for a corner. Anita's delivery picks out Ba, but his header from 12 yards out is easy for Gazzaniga.

Nice idea from Tiote, who spots Santon sneaking down the left wing. He puts too much on his pass and the ball rolls out for a throw. Taylor then puts in an aerial challenge on Ramirez. He leads with his arm and is lucky to escape a caution. Lambert has gone down and requires treatment.

Ameobi prepared to chase a long ball down the Newcastle left, but he can't keep it in play. Adkins looking very relaxed on the sidelines. He will be delighted with what he has seen so far.

Puncheon running at Santon, and past him. He is a tad fortunate, but carries on regardless. He then slides the ball into space behind Taylor, but Lambert hasn't read his intention.

Simpson able to see the ball out for a Newcastle throw deep in their half. The Magpies seeing plenty of the ball in the opening exchanges here. Can they do anything with their possession?

Another dangerous delivery floated into the Southampton box. Ba is looking to get on the end of it, but Fonte stands tall and glances to safety.

Tiote knocks and runs down the Newcastle right, but Shaw is able to hack into the stands. Gutierrez then floats a cross over from right to left. Ameobi unable to collect. He settles for a throw.

Early handball shout against Ba, which is given. He fires a wild shot goalwards in disgust. Pardew back on his seat. Has he been able to put a rocket up his side at the break?

Newcastle get the second half underway.

Ameobi on at the interval, in place of Ferguson.

The players are back with us and we are ready for the off once more.

Matt Penny says: "COYR don't let it slip now, by the sounds of the report SFC are all over Newcastle... Let's send Alan Pardew home pointless and let's continue our climb up the table!!"

Kenny Donaldson says: "Pardew needs to use 433, we are getting nowhere playing 442, Ba and Cisse not getting a touch of the ball. Something has to give as i see this poor run continuing."

Steve Charnock says: "What a load of rubbish AGAIN from us!! We've got our own show.. 'Can't pass won't pass'! Its a wonder Soton aint 4 or 5 up by now! Something HAS to change and fast!! or we're gonna finish 5th alright.... 5th BOTTOM!!!"

Emmet Griffin says: "Disappointing first half from the Geordies, I hope and pray Pardew gives them words of encouragement and they come out looking to end this bad spell - come on the Toon!"

Joshua Rance says: "Big fan of Southampton but still hoping that Ba will save Newcastle a point."

You can also bet in-play at Skybet.com. Southamptonm are now 2/7 to take the points, with Newcastle 12/1 and the draw 7/2. You can get 5/1 on Lambert getting the next goal.

Southampton 1 Newcastle 0. The hosts hold a narrow lead at half-time, with their skipper Adam Lallana breaking the deadlock. The Saints deserve to be in front, Newcastle have to improve.

Santon well forward for Newcastle, and looking to cut inside onto his left foot. His cross is powerfully headed clear by Fonte. Newcastle can't find a final ball of real quality.

Williamson up above Lambert to head clear for Newcastle. The Magpies can't get over halfway. Ramirez picks Santon's pocket. The ball is moved wide to Lambert, whose cross is looped over the top by the head of Ramirez.

Lambert once again over the set-piece. Not his best effort as he sends the ball sailing high into the crowd behind Krul's goal. Southampton asking the more probing questions, which will please Nigel Adkins. They just need a goal.

Ramirez hits the deack again. He moved the ball past Williamson, who put in an old fashioned body check. He is booked and has few complaints at the decision. Free-kick to the Saints 35 yards from goal, just left of centre.

Cisse looks to find Tiote, who has broken past his striker. Cisse needs to operate down the middle more as Newcastle have no options to aim at when he pulls wide. The Saints are able to double up on Ba and prevent him posing any kind of threat.

Cisse able to get to the dead-ball line, and he does look to cut the ball back towards the penalty spot. Ba is outnumbered and the Saints can clear. Newcastle try again, but Anita fails to gather a pass in on the edge of the area.

Head tennis in midfield until the Saints get a foot on the ball. They run out of room down their left, with Shaw unable to work the ball past Simpson. Newcastle work a couple of quick throws.

Cisse having to drop back inside his own half to get the ball. He is almost caught in possession. Newcastle are able to move forward, but Anita's cross from their right is not the best and is easily cleared by Yoshida.

Southampton close to adding a second. What a block from Taylor. Schneiderlin combines with Puncheon and breaks into space. He fires across Krul from 10 yards out and would have found the target were it not for Taylor, who manages to turn the ball behind. The resulting corner comes to nothing.

Ramirez in the mood now for Southampton. He looks to maze his way through a collection of Newcastle legs. He gets into the box, but then has a tug at Taylor's shirt as he tries to make his way round the burly centre-half.

How will Newcastle respond to falling behind? They haven't created much as yet and really need to get Ba and Cisse involved. They, in turn, need to stay onside.

GOAL SOUTHAMPTON - LALLANA. The home side break the deadlock. An ambitious effort from Clyne is only half-cleared by Williamson to Ramirez, with Krul having raced out of his area. He squares for Lallana to roll into an empty net.

Great effort from Lambert. Krul was left rooted to the spot. The ball struck the angle of post and bar. So unlucky. Meanwhile, Newcastle are back in the Saints half, but not for long as Puncheon springs clear.

Ramirez felled 30 yards from goal. Theatrical dive, but he was caught and had every right to go down. Another chance to test Krul. Lambert takes this time and sees his effort cannon off the crossbar. So close to an opener for the Saints.

Fine save from Krul to deny Puncheon. The Saints spring clear, with Lambert leading the charge. He cuts the ball back for Puncheon, whose low drive is kept out by the boot of Krul.

Again neither side is able to string a period of possession together. Too many aimless long lumps forward.

Ferguson collects a loose ball on the edge of the box, trying to work it onto his left foot to get a shot away. Solid from Clyne as he puts in a well-timed tackle. Newcastle then work the ball into Ba, but the flag goes up. Gutierrez also standing offside.

Nice turn from Ramirez in the middle of the park. He looks to force his way past Simpson, but is muscled out by the Magpies full-back.

Saints force another corner. Lallana takes, towards Lambert. He gets a touch, but can only loop the ball back into a crowded area. The ball ends up dropping to Schneiderlin, but he fires well wide from the edge of the area.

Tiote over a free-kick on the halfway line for Newcastle. He goes long towards Williamson, who wins his aerial duel but can't find a team-mate. Saints solid enough at the back. Even Stevens at the moment with neither side able to produce a moment of magic in the final third.

Puncheon picks up the ball in a central starting point. He is looking to drift across the field and not remain rooted to a left-wing berth. Southampton trying to mix things up, which is positive.

Ramirez over the free-kick. Decent effort as he gets the ball up and over the wall. Krul can see the effort all the way though and sprawls across his goal to palm clear.

Ferguson with a brilliant delivery from the free-kick, which he bends into the six-yard box. Ba unable to get a toe to the delivery. Southampton can counter at pace and Lallana wins a free-kick off Ferguson 25 yards from goal. Another soft one, but he was bundled over.

First caution of the afternoon goes to Fonte. He put in a strong challenge on Cisse, who didn't seem to fancy it. Fonte won the ball and then caught the Magpies striker. Harsh call. Cisse still down.

Odd clearance from Fonte as he puts in a diving header inside his own box and nods behind for a corner. Ferguson delivers for Newcastle, and Gazzaniga comes and gets a solid fist to the ball.

Ba and Cisse unable to combine on the edge of the box. Southampton spring clear, but Lambert is caught offside as he pulls wide to the left.

Risky back-pass from Tiote has Lambert interested. Krul took up a great starting position, though, and is able to race out of his box and slide the ball into touch. Newcastle almost shooting themselves in the foot.

Ba trying to ghost in behind Shaw. The Saints defender realises he is there just in time and pokes the ball back to his keeper. Gazzaniga clears down field, but the Saints can't keep the ball.

Puncheon works the ball onto his left foot and swings over a cross. Lambert looking to get on the end of it, but gets a nudge from Williamson and ends up jumping under the flight of the ball. Clever defending.

Ramirez with a clever pass down the channel for Lambert to chase. He can't collect the ball under pressure from Taylor. Ba has just gone down, but is soon back on his feet. He doesn't look happy. With play back underway, Cisse is caught offside again. About the fourth time already.

Another free-kick for the Saints aimed long, but the ball comes back at them. Newcastle can't get out of their own half. All a bit scrappy.

Gazzaniga wants an age to get rid of the ball. His clearance is charged down by Ba, but the Saints keeper is let off the knock as the ball loops back into his grasp.

Cisse trips Clyne. Frustration from the Newcastle striker. Free-kick is played long, but nodded clear by Williamson. Saints work the ball well again to Shaw. His cross takes a deflection and Krul has to be alert to get to the loose ball ahead of Lambert.

Newcastle need to get a foot on the ball and work their way back into this. They started brightly, but the Saints are now well on top. They are back on the ball, working it through midfield.

Ramirez asking questions of the referee. He points out that Southampton still had the ball. It was a robust challenge from Santon. Back in the present and Puncheon skips to the dead-ball line. His low cross is hacked to safety by Simpson from in front of his own goal.

Nice turn from Puncheon away from Santon. He finds Ramirez, who goes down on the edge of the box. Advantage played, but the Saints fail to make the most of it. Fans would have preferred a free-kick.

Ramirez with a positive burst forward for the Saints. He looks to pull the trigger from the edge of the box, bending the ball towards the bottom corner. Great block from Taylor.

Anita with a poor pass forward which is easily dealt with. Newcastle try again down their right, but Simpson's delivery is also cut out. The Magpies are prepared to keep going long towards Ba and Cisse and work off flick ons or poor clearances.

Good battle between Williamson and Lambert. No quarter being given there. Tiote able to break things up in the middle of the park and get Newcastle looking forward once more.

Southampton yet to get going, as another long ball trickles put of play for a Newcastle throw. As I say that, they win the ball back and feed Clyne. He tries his luck from 25 yards and an effort which was heading well wide deflects off Lallana and narrowly past the other post.

Simpson with a cross into the box which is only half-cleared by the Saints. The ball drops to Ferguson on the left, who dinks it back into the danger area. Ba climbs and nods goalwards, but his effort drops well wide of the target.

Santon surges forward from full-back, expect to see plenty of that this afternoon if he is afforded space. Newcastle patient with their build-up, prepared to go backwards when required.

Gutierrez with a hanging cross from deep which dips towards the back post. Cisse is ready and waiting, but Gazzaniga judges the flight of the ball perfectly and plucks it out of the air.

Rather aimless ball down the line from Shaw. Saints give the ball straight back after a pass from Tiote skids off the surface and evades Gutierrez. The surface is very slick and passes need to be to feet.

Decent delivery from Lallana. Southampton have runners attacking the ball, but none can get a telling touch. Tiote able to glance to safety off his back.

Early throw for the Saints. Newcastle pegged back by their own corner flag and Lallana is able to force a corner. Chance for the big men to trot forward from the back.

Southampton get the game up and running.

Pardew given a warm reception from the home support. Nice to see. We are now ready for kick-off, with the pre-match formalities completed. Change of ends slightly delayed us.

Rousing reception from those inside the ground as the players enter the arena. Decent attendance in spite of the conditions. Both sets of players look to be in determined mood.

The players are in the tunnel. We will have to leave the feedback there for now, but there will be further opportunities to have your say at half-time and at the final whistle.

Players trudging back to the shelter of the dressing room. Only 10 minutes from kick-off now. Get a feeling we will get goals today, but it's a close one to call given recent showings from the two sides.

Ronnie thinks the Magpies can cause problems today. He says: "Shane Ferguson's dangerous crossing will trouble the Saints today."

Rain lashing down on the South Coast. Horrible conditions, but hopefully those on show can make light of that fact and put in a performance for the hardy souls who have braved the elements.

Keep your thoughts coming in to Chris.Burton@bskyb.com or @SkySportsChrisB. How do you see this game going?

For the record, today's referee is Martin Atkinson.

Steve Charnock is not too sure about the Magpies' selection. He says: "Not sure on starting Anita & Tiote but it's good to see Ranger on the bench, will be a close game, need to mark Lambert."

William Blackshaw thinks Newcastle can claim three points today. He says: "If we can stop focusing on who's missing and realise we've enough in today's line up we can easily get 3 points. Come on Newcastle."

Newcastle players out onto the field for their pre-match warm-up. It is a bitterly cold day, so important to get the blood pumping and avoid any unnecessary muscle pulls.

Newcastle team: Krul, Simpson, Williamson, S. Taylor, Santon, Gutierrez , Tiote, Anita, Ferguson, Cisse, Ba. Subs: Harper, Tavernier, Perch, Bigirimana, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Ranger.

Southampton team: Gazzaniga, Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Shaw, Puncheon, Schneiderlin, Cork, Lallana, Ramirez, Lambert. Subs: K. Davis, Hooiveld, S. Davis, Rodriguez, Ward-Prowse, Mayuka, Guly.

You can also bet in-play throughout the game at Skybet.com. Under-fire Southampton earned a crucial win at QPR last week, but are 11/10 to record successive victories when Pardew returns to St Mary's with his out-of-sorts Newcastle side (12/5). Saints are yet to keep a clean sheet this season but have scored in 10 of their 12 league games, so both teams to score at 4/7 could be worth a look. Unsure of your scorecast bet? Indecisive punters can rejoice as Rickie Lambert to score first and either Southampton to win 2-0 or 2-1 has been enhanced to 20/1.

Can the Saints climb out of the bottom or three or will it be a productive return to the South Coast for Alan Pardew and Newcastle? Who will be the men to keep an eye on? Let me know your thoughts.

Newcastle are also in need of the points, with a frustrating start to the season leaving them in the bottom half of the division, with just one win in seven and struggling to replicate their heroics from 2011/12.

Southampton could clamber back out of the relegation zone with a win today, and will be looking to make it back-to-back successes in the league and three games unbeaten.

It is, however, worth pointing out that there is plenty to play for on the field, with Pardew's presence merely an intriguing sub-plot.

Former Saints boss Alan Pardew will take centre stage today, as he returns to St Mary's with his current employers.
