Johnny Russell: At the double to sink nine-man Rangers

Strikers Johnny Russell and Jon Daly shared the goals, with the former grabbing two against a lacklustre Rangers defence who would have hoped for better. Midfielders Kal Naismith and Ian Black also received marching orders as frustrations boiled over in the closing minutes.

The build-up to the game revolved around the controversial decision by Rangers to decline a ticket allocation, instead choosing to boycott the match after consulting fans. The tense atmosphere was evident, and it was perhaps Rangers themselves who suffered the most because of it.

A simple lofted ball in the first minute created confusion in the backline, and it was Scottish striker Russell who nipped in and finished low past Gers keeper Alexander for a 1-0 lead after 15 seconds.

For much of the game Rangers were on the back-foot, struggling against the Premier League Tangerines. Another lapse in concentration delivered a further body-blow to Ally McCoist's charges as a free-kick found an unmarked Daly in the box. The striker duly headed home to double the home side's lead after 36 minutes.

As Rangers pushed forward in search of a goal, Daly and Russell were to combine again further up the pitch in the 79th minute. Daly's deft through-ball left Russell one-on-one with keeper Alexander. The result was the same as before, the striker getting the better of the Gers stopper to complete the rout.

Midfielders Naismith and Black were then sent off in the space of four minutes to leave Rangers three goals down, two men down and out of the Scottish Cup, with Tangerines advancing to the quarter-finals.
