FULL-TIME: Benfica earn a 3-1 lead ahead of the second leg at St James' Park thanks to second half goals from Lima and Cardozo (penalty). Papiss Cisse had given Newcastle the lead only for Rodrigo to draw Benfica level before the break.

Cabaye is lucky to escape a booking after catching the Benfica player with a stray arm.

There will be four minutes of added time at the end of the 90 minutes.

Ameobi is booked for raising his hands to Gaitan.

Santon has a shot at goal for Newcastle, but he fails to direct his effort on target.

Simpson is forced off and Dan Gosling will replace him.

Danny Simpson appears to be struggling with a knock.

Gaitan has two efforts at goal and after his first shot is block his second attempt is easily saved by Krul.

Shola Ameobi comes on for Marveaux.

Benfica make a double change with Lima coming on for Rodrigo and Perez replacing Gomes in midfield.

Newcastle are forced to make a change with Anita coming on for Perch.

Perch is down and in need of treatment.

Benfica waste a great chance to take the lead as Rodrigo squares the ball across the face of goal for Cardozo, but the striker cannot get enough on the ball and he sends his effort wide of the goal.

Matic is down after going down on the edge of the box, but he is ok to continue.

Benfica win a corner as Gutierrez heads behind. After a few scrambles Newcastle finally manage to clear their lines.

The ball sits up to Gomes on the edge of the box, but his shot is high, wide and not very handsome.

Krul is quickly off the line to gather Matic's attempted pass towards John.

Newcastle so unlucky not to score as Marveaux sets Cisse clear on goal and the striker's shot hits the post after clipping the ball over Artur.

Newcastle go so close to making it 2-0 as Cisse's shot deflects off Garay onto the post before being collected just off the line by Artur.

Perch is the first player to be booked after a late challenge on Gaitan.

Gaitan gets above Simpson in the box, but he fails to direct his header on target.

Benfica have claims for a penalty waved away as Cardozo goes down in the box under pressure from Taylor. Good decision from the officials there as there was little contact.

GOAL: Newcastle break the deadlock as Simpson sends Sissoko in down the right and his cross is turned home by Cisse inside the six-yard box. Great start for Newcastle.

Newcastle have a lucky escape as Gaitan fires in a fierce shot which squirms under the body of Krul, but he reacts quickest to gather the ball just around his goalline.

Andre Gomes has the first sight of goal for Benfica, but he drags his shot well wide of the target.

Benfica have yet to get going so far and Garay kicks the ball straight out of play after attempting a simple pass.

The corner is cleared by Sissoko before being hacked to safety by Cabaye.

Marveaux almost sends Cisse through on goal, but the striker's touch is poor and the ball runs through to Artur.

Alan Pardew is already making notes on the sidelines, but it has been a decent start from the visitors.
