Sturridge almost squeezes through down the right channel but the ball ends up safely with Howard again.

End-to-end stuff now as the game opens up.

Gibson looks to find Coleman but he never quite has the angle for the pass and puts the ball out for a goal-kick.

Outrageous crossfield pass from Gerrard gets Johnson away down the right and his cross comes through for Coutinho but the Liverpool man can only fire straight at Howard.

Sturridge offside at the other end but he scoops the ball over the bar anyway.

Next Everton attack breaks down as Pienaar is ruled offside.

But Mirallas wins a corner now.

Chris: "Everton's performance has been shocking so far - their attacking play has been woeful at times."

Half Time. Fierce contest but few chances. Goalless at the break.

One minute of added time.

Fellaini flings an arm at Gerrard while in possession of the ball himself. Lucky to escape action for that one.

Everton take it short and it comes to nothing as Baines' cross is a poor one.

Early foul on Pienaar but the Everton free-kick comes to nothing.

Liverpool comfortably in possession with early touches for Reina in goal.

Everton kick-off and we are underway.

You'll Never Walk Alone blares out and the Merseyside derby is about to get underway.

Thanks for all your feedback. The players are in the tunnel and will be out shortly.

Mark: "I think Liverpool will be full of confidence but I fear that will bring complacency between the players. I feel Everton will sneak this one by pure team togetherness."

Jack: "Liverpool to win 3-0 with goals from Stevie G, Coutinho and Sturridge. We have much more talent."

Everton have won 56% of games with Johnny Heitinga playing this season, and just 10% without him. Of all players to have both played and missed at least 10 of their team's games this season, Heitinga has the biggest impact on his team's win rate.

How about some Opta stats for you... Lucas Leiva has made a tackle more frequently than any other player in the Premier League this season (every 14.9 minutes on average).

Danny: "I think that Everton might just edge this one and the score will be 1-0."

Chris: "Now the team-sheets are out, Carragher aside, I can't see past a red-men win. 2-0 with a couple of pens from Stevie G."

Joseph: "I think the result would be purely academic... perhaps for the bragging rights if the folks in blue put one over us today and finish above us this season. It's a season of rebuilding for us and we can all look forward to the next season with hopes that BR will put all gears in place. Nevertheless, I would like to see a 3-0 scoreline with Coutinho on the scoresheet! He's so so talented!"

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard scored only his second Premier League hat-trick in this fixture last season.

Daniel Sturridge has scored seven goals and made three assists in 11 Premier League appearances for Liverpool. He starts up front in the absence of Luis Suarez.

Connor: "Liverpool are always favourites at Anfield but I think Everton will win 3-2."

Blaine: "A good game on the cards for the neutral, I think Everton will break their "Big Four" away day duck and steal a 3-2 win! I think there are goals in this one today!"

"This is Stewart MacLaren from a warm and windy Torrevieja in Spain saying that Everton will beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Merseyside Derby match at Anfield this Afternoon with excellent goals from Kevin Mirallas and Victor Anichebe."

Okba: "I see a lot of talk about if Liverpool can win a match without Luis Suarez and all I can say is they are capable of winning games without Suarez. They are not a one or two man team and I get a feeling they will hurt Everton today. Liverpool to win 3-0."

It has certainly been a feisty fixture over the years. Liverpool v Everton has seen more red cards than any other fixture in Premier League history (20).

Waleed: "It's a massive derby. Liverpool have a lot of clever tricky players but Everton have a real physical presence about them with Anichebe, Fellaini, Jelavic etc. I think there'll be more red cards than goals in this one. A narrow 1-0 to the Reds!"

Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Agger, Carragher, Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Coutinho, Downing, Sturridge. Subs: Jones, Skrtel, Shelvey, Borini, Assaidi, Coates, Suso.

Everton: Howard, Coleman, Baines, Jagielka, Distin, Mirallas, Osman, Gibson, Pienaar, Fellaini, Anichebe. Subs: Mucha, Hibbert, Heitinga, Jelavic, Oviedo, Naismith, Duffy.

Under David Moyes, Everton have played 44 away games against the traditional "big four" and are yet to win. They have taken just 17 points from 132 on offer.

At Anfield, the Toffees are without a win in 12 Premier League games, losing six including five of the last eight.

The odds reflect Everton's poor record in this fixture in recent years. They have only won one of their last 12 Premier League Merseyside derbies (D4 L7).

Chris: "This match is going to be a cracker and I'm really looking forward to it. I think this match will be a tight one, but if Everton take their chances and don't allow Liverpool to dominate the game, then I think they'll win it 2-1."

Our friends at Sky Bet make Liverpool the 10/11 favourites with Everton as 100/30 underdogs. The draw is available at 5/2.

With Liverpool coming into this match on the back of a 6-0 win at Newcastle, the bookmakers regard that as unlikely.

The Toffees go into the game five points clear of the Reds with just three games remaining so David Moyes' men can mathematically guarantee a top-six finish with victory here.

The hopes of a top-four finish may have disappeared for these sides but this is still a Merseyside derby and Liverpool surely need to win to have any hope of finishing above their neighbours.
