With Rooney unlikely to figure, Javier Hernandez could be handed a starting berth - with the Mexican forward expected to take part in Rio Ferdinand's testimonial on Friday, along with first-choice goalkeeper David de Gea.

Jonny Evans and Nani remain doubtful for United after limping out of a friendly date with AIK on Tuesday, while Darren Fletcher (bowel condition) and Nick Powell (leg) are sidelined, but Wilfried Zaha can expect to see some action after impressing over the summer.

Wigan wrapped up the signing of James McClean from Sunderland on Thursday, becoming the club's 10th addition of a busy transfer window, and he could make his competitive debut at Wembley.

Another new arrival, Thomas Rogne, is struggling with a back problem, but Leon Barnett and Emerson Boyce looked solid against Barnsley and can expect to keep their places in Coyle's starting XI.

Grant Holt is likely to lead the line after stepping down into the Championship from Norwich City, with Marc Antoine-Fortune providing cover from the bench, but Gary Caldwell (hip) and Ivan Ramis (knee) will be missing for the Latics until at least October.
