Goals have been a rare commodity of late for the home side, and somewhat against the run of play, Scott Carson's foul on Dan Gosling presented Ince with the perfect opportunity to net their first strike for three games on home soil.

The England U21s star obliged, converting from the spot high to Carson's right (24), to put his side in front.

The visitors rallied in the second half, and were unfortunate not to level with headers from Thomas Rogne and Grant Holt coming back off crossbar.

The Seasiders did have chances to seal the points late on, but they held on for yet another home clean sheet.

James McClean saw red in stoppage-time, after reacting to a robust Gary MacKenzie challenge, to complete a miserable afternoon for the visitors, who now have suffered four straight away defeats.

Wigan started the match very much in the ascendancy, enjoying the lion's share of the ball, but leaving Matt Gilks with very little to do in the Blackpool goal.

Nick Powell should really have put the visitors in front, heading wide from point black range after good work from Rogne picking him out from a free-kick.

And that miss prove costly as Gosling's burst into the box was halted by Carson, with the referee showing no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Blackpool players and staff were asking for further punishment to be dished out to Carson, who could have been adjudged to be last man, but no card was brandished.

Ince converted with aplomb, settling his side down after a nervy opening period of the match.

The Seasiders, who were without manager Paul Ince as a result of a five-match stadium ban, emerged for the second half with a spring in their step.

Just two minutes after the restart both Ricardo Fuller and Gosling had successive shots blocked inside the box and from the resulting corner the Jamaican striker saw his near post flick cleared away inside the six-yard box, with the ball heading for the back of the net.

Wigan looked out of sorts and the anonymous Powell - operating out of position up front - was withdrawn along with Jordi Gomez on 67 minutes, with Holt and Marc Antoine-Fortune coming on to add attacking impetus.

The changes gave the Latics a much-needed cutting edge and after Fuller chipped over the bar, 25 yards out, from Gosling's through-ball, the visitors struck the woodwork twice in a matter of minutes.

Firstly Leon Barnett found the crossbar with his header on 75 minutes before Holt glanced a header against the upright from James Perch's left-wing cross, with Blackpool under increasing pressure.

Ince and Blackpool could have added to their lead late on, but McClean's straight red card, after reacting to an apparent stamp, added salt to Wigan's wounds.
