The Latics made it four wins and two draws from six matches, and in doing so edged closer to the play-off picture.

Marc-Antoine Fortune opened the scoring with just five minutes gone, a wonderful finish into the top corner that gave Lee Camp no chance.

Wigan should have wrapped the game up such was their first-half dominance, but the visitors somehow kept the deficit to one at the interval.

The home side secured the points just before the hour mark when Fortune's shot was deflected past his own goalkeeper by the unfortunate Elliott Ward.

And Jordi Gomez added icing to the cake with a magnificent third goal right at the death.

The Cherries never stopped playing their football and had chances in the final quarter, but didn't test Ali Al Habsi nearly enough before it was too late.

Wigan have tended to come flying out of the blocks under their new manager, and again they took the game to their opponents from the off.

Nick Powell fired straight at the goalkeeper inside two minutes, before Fortune showed him how it's done moments later.

James McArthur dragged a shot wide before Callum McManaman raced clear, only to fire straight at Camp.

Powell squandered two more decent chances, and McManaman fired over the top as the Cherries held on for dear life.

Matt Ritchie had Bournemouth's first opportunity on 25 minutes, but Al Habsi was on hand to make the save.

The game then went a bit flat, before Ben Watson warmed the goalkeeper's fingertips just before the halfway mark.

Wigan made their first change at the interval, James Perch making way for new signing Tyias Browning.

And the on-loan Everton man made an immediate impact, getting a timely toe in to halt a promising Bournemouth attack.

The visitors then put together a nice period of sustained possession without really threatening Al Habsi's goal.

And Wigan as good as made the game safe on 58 minutes when Fortune's shot deflected off Ward and over the unlucky Camp.

Chris McCann should have made it 3-0 only to fire straight at the goalkeeper, before the visitors put together their best spell of the match.

Substitute Tokelo Rantie steered just past the post and Marc Pugh shot right at Al Habsi, before Wigan made the game safe right on full-time.

Gomez, off the bench, was given too much time and space, and he rifled the ball past Camp from 30 yards.

There was still time for the Cherries to twice threaten through Lewis Grabban and Rantie.

But Al Habsi retained his concentration to secure a fourth clean sheet in a row in the league.
