Luke Norris' shot was adjudged to have been blocked by Chris McCready's hand, although there was little the defender could have done to get out of the way.

Elito coolly dispatched the resulting spot kick into the ball into the bottom right of Barry Roche's goal in the 52nd minute.

Dagenham had the better of the early exchanges, with on-loan striker Norris testing Roche early on with a free-kick from the edge of the area, but the goalkeeper was equal to his effort.

Joe McGee had the Shrimps' best chance up that point when he fired a shot over the crossbar from 18 yards.

But as Dagenham looked to close out the match, Morecambe skipper Hughes rescued a point for the Lancashire side with a composed finish from a tight angle in the dying minutes of the game.
