The Royals have not won in Berkshire in six matches and were fortunate to claim a point against the dominant Yorkshire club.

The Terriers took the lead early on through striker Nahki Wells, as the home defence was easily breached, but Reading drew level just three minutes later when Pavel Pogrebnyak slotted in his second penalty in as many matches.

Reading had been struggling at the Madejski Stadium and, in their five previous matches, had scored only twice - from an own goal and a penalty.

Huddersfield were in poor form at home and away, not winning in their previous five games. On the road, they had won only once in 10 outings.

It did not start well for Huddersfield, with defender Tommy Smith booked after only 33 seconds for a clumsy foul on Pogrebnyak. In the fourth minute, though, matters got better for them when they went in front.

Smith's long ball evaded Sean Morrison and Wells was left with a clear run on home goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. The Bermuda international ran on and comfortably beat McCarthy with a low shot.

It was his fifth goal for Huddersfield and 19th of the season, 14 having been scored for Bradford before his move from the League One club in the January transfer window.

However, Reading were level three minutes later. Jobi McAnuff appeared to be going nowhere in the Huddersfield area but Oliver Norwood foolishly tugged at his shirt.

Pogrebnyak sent Huddersfield keeper Alex Smithies the wrong way from the spot to score his 11th goal of the season. He had also netted a penalty in the 3-1 home defeat by Barnsley on Tuesday.

Huddersfield swiftly recovered their composure, with Norwood testing McCarthy with a fierce drive and then McCarthy doing even better to tip over a curling effort from Adam Clayton. Wells also struck a post from an acute angle.

Reading were unable to muster much going forward but almost went in front in the 32nd minute. Chris Gunter crossed from the right to the near post and Smithies had to move smartly to push away an agile header from Pogrebnyak.

Michael Hector, the Reading defender who was making his home debut in midfield, also gave Smithies plenty to do with a well-struck shot that the keeper initially fumbled. From the resultant corner, Hector headed high over the crossbar.

Huddersfield maintained the upper hand in a scrappy second half, with defender Paul Dixon taking advantage of a Garath McCleary error before shooting tamely wide from distance.

Norwood shot wide from a promising opening, McCarthy just held a 30-yard effort from Oscar Gobern, McCarthy saved well from Danny Ward and Jordan Obita had to clear off the goal-line from a Murray Wallace header, but Reading clung on to their point.
