Defences in charge at Killie

Kilmarnock and St Johnstone shared the spoils after a rather insipid 0-0 draw in their Scottish Premiership clash at Rugby Park.

Killie were looking for a first win of the season while Saints were hoping for a lift after their Europa League exit on penalties but neither side could manage a breakthrough, although Kris Boyd very nearly won it for the hosts in the second-half.

Stevie May was first to try his luck for the visitors but his half-volley was just wide, while Saints scrambled a Rory McKeown cross to safety at the other end before Boyd could force it over the line.

The best chance of the match so far then fell to May and Killie goalkeeper Craig Samson did well to block his close-range volley.

Saints goalkeeper Alan Mannus was then called into action and managed to keep out a Paul Heffernan header.

The hosts had the better of the second-half opportunities, Mannus saving a Darren Barr header before Boyd's well-struck shot flew just wide.

Boyd was then presented with another reasonable chance to break the deadlock but he did not make perfect contact and his shot skimmed the outside of the post.

Kilmarnock then appealed for a penalty when William Gros' drive seemed to hit Frazer Wright's hand but the defender knew little about it and referee Willie Collum was unmoved.

Boyd collected the loose ball but his frustrating afternoon continued as his shot hit the underside of the crossbar.

And the biggest cheer of the day came when Kilmarnock skipper Manuel Pascali came off the bench in stoppage-time, having been out since February with a hamstring problem.
