Neil Lennon's side now face an uphill battle when these two teams face each other again in eight days time. They certainly had the chances to score tonight, but defensively, they looked vulnerable and Lennon will be hoping that a Celtic Park crowd can spur them on to turn this tie around.

It's all over in Kazakhstan and it's finished Shakhtyor Karaganda 2 Celtic 0.

Shakhtyor mount a counter attack but Ledley snuffs out the danger and the ball finds its way back to Forster.

It's a great throw from Matthews towards Balde but the hosts clear and could break...

Celtic win a throw deep in the opposition half. Matthews is going to launch it into the area.

The fourth official indicates three extra minutes to be played. There's still time for Celtic to pull one back.

Matthew's throw is flicked on by Van Dijk into a dangerous area but Mulgrew heads over the bar.

Celtic are throwing bodies forward as the game enters its closing stages.

Samaras loses the ball inside his own half, really frustrating evening for Celtic as his team-mates let him know exactly what they think.

Another chance for the hosts to launch a throw-in into the area, not where Celtic want to be.

Van Dijk eventually takes it but it's a poor effort which sails way over the bar. That pretty much summed up Celtic's night.

Free-kick in a shooting position after Commons is brought down on the turn. This could be a big moment for Celtic's Champions League hopes.

Corner for the hosts is played short before Celtic eventually clear their lines.

Amido Balde replaces Emilio Izaguirre for Celtic. Attacker for defender - Lennon is clearly desperate for that away goal.

The scorer of the opening goal, Andrei Finonchenko, is replaced by Igor Zenkovich for the hosts.

Mulgrew's free-kick is punched away by Mokin. I'm not sure if the ball is slippery tonight but both goal keepers seem reluctant to try catching it from crosses.

The visitors are going for this now with Mouyokolo joining the attack.

Celtic face a big uphill task now and an away goal could prove vital. In terms of striking options, Neil Lennon still has Anthony Stokes and Amido Balde at his disposal on the bench.

The hosts make it 2-0 on the counter attack. Khizhnichenko grabs a deserved goal after the ball is deflected into his path for him to guide it past Forster. 2-0.

Celtic are now camped in the opposing half but Shakhtyor's pace on the counter attack is still a threat.

Free-kick for the hosts in a dangerous position but Forster meets it to punch clear when he really should have caught it.

Giorgios Samaras is currently recieving treatment off the pitch for a knock picked up in the build up to that chance.

Izaguirre's delivery is headed goal-wards by Forrest but Mokin pulls of a good save low down to deny him. Great chance for Celtic.

Celtic appear to be learning how to deal with these long throws as Van Dijk heads away Vicius' delivery.

Izaguirre tries to force an opening down the left but the hosts stand firm once again.

Matthews picks out Forrest in a good position, the youngster does well to work himself into a shooting position but he slices his effort over the bar.

Mulgrew's free-kick is easily dealt with and put out for a throw-in on the right which Matthews attempts to launch in the area, but it is headed away.

Lustig limped off the pitch so the substitution looks like a precautionary move from Lennon.

Steven Mouyokolo was completely bullied in the lead up to that chance, it's not been the best of nights for the former Hull City man.

Forster is called into action at the other end but Khizhnickenko's effort doesn't cause him too many problems.

Chance for Mulgrew who acrobatically fires into the arms of Mokin whilst unmarked in the area.

Commons did well to intercept the free-kick, he finds Izaguirre storming forward but the full-back is unable to take advantage as he finds himself outnumbered.

Ghazaryan stands over it but it's short and Celtic can break.

Free-kick to the hosts after Brown bundles over Canas. Another chacne to get the ball into the box.

Another throw is launched into the box but Celtic clear their lines much to the relief of Neil Lennon.

The long-throw is cleared by Celtic, just. Van Dijk stabs it away before Brown heads it out for another throw from the other side.

The hosts still look dangerous on the attack as they win a thow-in a good position to be launched into the area.

Celtic may have enjoyed better spells of play in the opening stages of this half but their defensive frailties are still clear when the hosts manage to get balls into the box.

The free-kick is sliced in the air by Van Dijk before Forster punches the ball away.

The hosts break with Khizhnichenko who is manhandled by Mouyokolo for a free-kick by the corner flag.

It's been a much better start to this half for Celtic who geniunely look like scoring if they can get their final balls right.

Chance for Celtic as Commons finds Izaguirre on the left. He does well to cut inside of the full-back before blazing over on his weaker foot.

Celtic appeal for a handball inside the area, the referee plays on and the Hoops can continue to press.

The corner is played short to Commons but his cross is cleared away by Mokin who punches the ball out for a throw-in.

Celtic win a corner after Lustig's deep cross is awkwardly put behind.

Samaras wins a free-kick inside his own half after having his shirt almost torn off his back by the defender.

Both teams vying for possession in the opening two minutes with Celtic still unable to force a way through.

Mulgrew's outswinging corner is headed clear and the hosts can break.

Not the greatest half for Celtic who have really struggled to deal with Shakhtyor's threat from long throws. They have had glimmers of hope with Commons and Samaras both coming close but I imagine that Neil Lennon will be giving them a bit of a dressing down at half-time.

That's it for the first-half in Kazakhstan. Shakhtyor Karaganda lead Celtic 1-0 thanks to Andrei Finonchenko's early strike.

This time Lustig heads away before Van Dijk clears the return ball upfield.

Sergei Khizhnichenko falls over the ball and concedes a throw-in. Maybe that's why he's wearing shirt number 91...

Gediminas Vicius demonstrates once again how powerful his throw-ins are, this time he zips it across the pitch from inside his own half.

Commons tries to force an opening but his strike is blocked inside the area.

An ambitious effort from Vicius is on target but it's simple for Forster to deal with as he collects the ball.

Forrest beats the full-back but his cross evades everyone inside the area and it goes out for a throw-in on the other side.

Celtic try to spark an attack but the ball rolls through to Mokin without really threatening. Story of the half for them.

It's the hosts who are in control at the minute as they look to double their lead.

The resulting corner is headed high and wide, over the bar by defender Nikola Vasilijeviae.

At the other end, the long throws are continuing to cause problems in the Celtic defence and Lustig is forced to head behind for a corner.

Mulgrew's delivery is perfect to Samaras at the back post but the Greek striker heads wide when he really should have scored. Big chance for Celtic.

A great cross-field ball finds Georgi Ghazaryan out wide but Commons and Lustig are able to double up to avert the danger.

Celtic lose possession again with Mulgrew's pass being too heavy for Samaras.

Izaguirre's cross is headed high over the bar by Commons after a good spell of possession.

The hosts try another strike from distance, but again, the ball is dragged wide of Forster's goal.

A wasteful ball from Commons as he looks to find Samaras, but it goes out for a throw-in.

Celtic are starting to come into the game now as Commons' effort seems to have spurred them on.

Great effort from Kris Commons whose strike rattles against the bar with Mokin routed to the spot. The ball bounces clear but replays are inconclusive as to whether it went over the line.

The corner is too deep and Izaguirre is able to clear at the back post.

Lustig concedes a corner after the goalscorer Finonchenko tries to wriggle free in the area.

Celtic continue to be frustrated as Commons is pushed off the ball too easily by the home defender.

A strike from distance goes well wide of Forster's goal as Neil Lennon looks understandably concerned on the Celtic bench.

Celtic try to hit-back immediately but James Forrest's cross can't find anybody in the area.

Shakhtyor are buoyed by that goal and they immediately try to go on the attack but it comes to nothing.

There was some suspect defending from Celtic in the build up to that goal, but the hosts have already shown how dangerous their long throws can be.

Shakhtyor Karaganda take the lead against the run of play as a long throw is converted from close-range by captain Andrei Finonchenko who prods through the legs of Forster. 1-0.

Shakhtyor try the long throw which is headed clear but the ball is played back into the area and Mouyokolo is fortunate not to concede a penalty for a handball.

Forster's goalkick is short and the hosts can attack but Mouyokolo is there to sweep up the danger and clear for a throw-in deep inside the Celtic half.

Commons strikes from distance but he drags his effort wide. It's been all Celtic so far.

Shakhtyor are able to clear and get the ball upfield which goes out for a goal kick as Fraser Forster gets his first touch.

Mulgrew delivers another good ball in as Van Dijk is challenging with Mokin in the air once again.

Very bright start to the game from Celtic as they continue to press. Another corner to be taken by Mulgrew.

Celtic come close to taking the lead with Mouyokolo and Van Dijk's height causing problems amongst the Shakhtyor defence, but goalkeeper Aleksandr Mokin is able to deal with it.

Mulgrew's inswinging corner is almost forced home by Commons after pressure from Van Dijk. The ball is scrambled away for another corner from the opposite side.

Commons tries to work a one-two with Samaras but they aren't quite on the same wave-length and Shakhtyor clear their lines.

Early possession for Celtic as they try to mount an attack but Giorgios Samaras is flagged for offside.

Celtic have made three changes from the side which won 2-0 at Aberdeen on Saturday, with Mikael Lustig, Virgil Van Dijk and James Forrest all coming in for Beram Kayal, Adam Matthews and Efe Ambrose who have dropped to the bench.
