Manager Alan Pardew has ruled the France international midfielder, who is wanted by Arsenal, out of the game at the Globe Arena, while central defender Steven Taylor serves the second of his three-match ban.

Loan signing Loic Remy (calf) has returned to training but will not be involved against Morecambe, nor will midfielder Cheick Tiote, although the former could feature in the squad against Fulham on Saturday.

Full-back Massadio Haidara (knee) and midfielder Jonas Gutierrez (hamstring) are still out.

Morecambe will be boosted by the return of midfielder Andrew Wright as they look to cause another Capital One Cup upset.

Having already disposed of Wolves in the first round and kept their unbeaten home run going with a 2-0 win over Exeter on Saturday, the Shrimps are in good spirits ahead of the visit of Alan Pardew's men.

Wright has served his one-match ban after being sent off against Portsmouth while goalkeeper Barry Roche (bug), Kevin Ellison and Marcus Marshall (both hamstring) returned to action against the Grecians after being sidelined.

Their first-round hero Ryan Williams looks set to start once more but Jack Redshaw remains out with his long-term hip injury.

You can watch Morecambe v Newcastle live on Sky Sports 4HD, 7.30pm
