FT: Shakhtar Donetsk 1 Man Utd 1

Thanks for joining me and make sure you're back for live Europa League coverage tomorrow night. In the meantime, we'll have a match report and reaction on site soon. Good night.

And that's it! United hang on for a point in a game which saw both sides produce one good chance and take it. Without Rooney, that's a decent result for Moyes and four points from two Champions League games is a good start.

90+2
We're into the second of two added minutes and on balance we're on the way to a fair result. Jones comes on to kill time, replacing Welbeck.

90+1
Pyatov punches the corner clear and after Rafael goes down but gets nothing, Shakhtar again break. Bernard now comes on having been forced to wait a moment ago.

90
However, it's United who launch an attack and van Persie expertly ensures a corner.

89
A double change for Shakhtar as Bernard replaces Adriano and Ferreyra also comes on.

88
More possession play for Shakhtar but they don't really have the option to launch it forward, such has been the visitors' aerial dominance.

87
United enjoy a rare attack and Rafael's left-footed free-kick isn't a bad one, but no United player is prepared to gamble and Shakhtar can clear.

86
Costa charges past Rafael but the ball rolls out as Shakhtar prepare another change.

85
Fine save from De Gea as Taison lashes a cross into the United box which is deflected towards the United goal and is expertly tipped over. Shakhtar's first corner results in another which is hacked skywards before De Gea can collect.

84
Rafael is arguably a touch fortunate not to go in the book for a foul on Shevchuk, which allows Fernando to make way for Ilsinho.

83
Taison, the hosts' best player, finds Teixeira but Rafael tackles him and find Giggs, who is then brought down by Taison.

82
There's a side you don't often see in a Champions League game - a Mexican wave. Anyway, it reflects a brief lull as United reorganise well.

81
Smalling concedes a throw as Shakhtar continue to probe. Vidic then rises to clear a long ball.

80
Carrick spreads it to Evra as United try to quiet the crowd and they do so reasonably well, allowing Smalling and Vidic to enjoy a touch before Rafael clears long.

79
Throw for Shakhtar deep inside the United half as Vidic steps across to cut out a long ball.

78
Welbeck gives it away and Teixeira breaks. Credit to Welbeck though because it's he who breaks down the attack having tracked back.

77
Smalling is forced to clear as Costa tries to cross from the left. Shakhtar have their tails up.

76
GOAL! Taison (76)! Finally a Shakhtar ball causes chaos in the United box and it's thanks to Rakitskiy, who gallops forward to inject life into his side's effort. It falls to Taison and he blasts high into the net. Two goals from nothing and it's 1-1.

75
I dare say this containing job is pretty easy for United now, with Shakhtar running out of ideas. Changes are surely imminent.

74
Giggs gets a stern telling off after a late challenge on Srna deep inside the hosts' half. Shakhtar break and Shevchuk's cross is blocked.

73
Srna tries again to find Costa but Evra is alive to it and clears. Shakhtar then win a throw and Teixeira briefly threatens before Evra recovers to win it back and clear.

72
Statistics show that Shakhtar have enjoyed 54% of possession but that's worth nothing at the moment as United lead with less than 20 minutes to go.

71
Taison is the liveliest Shakhtar player and manages to just about turn Smalling before seeing his shot deflected safely to De Gea. United break and it's a rare chance for van Persie, whose shot on the turn is tame and blocked easily.

70
Evra goes down and is writhing in agony but the free-kick goes against the United man. Looking at the replay, both Evra and Hubschman went in high so it was a hard one to call.

69
Another hopeful ball from Srna and Shakhtar aren't yet willing to accept that when they attack centrally, Smalling and Vidic are in complete control. Their chief threat looks to be Shevchuk and his runs down the left.

68
Srna is soon involved and finds Kucher, but his ball to Costa is poor and the striker can't keep it in play.

67
Srna goes down as he tries to cross the ball and he appears to be in agony. However, he's soon up and there didn't look to be much contact.

66
Fellaini leaves the field and is replaced by Giggs, who makes his 145th appearance in the Champions League, which makes him the all-time leader in appearances from Raul.

65
Srna's shot is poor and blocked out by the wall. Shakhtar quickly launch another attack and win a throw deep in the United half.

64
Vidic is finally caught out as Costa nips past him, and the United defender is forced to bring down his man to prevent Costa having a clear sight of goal. Free-kick 20 yards out in a central position.

63
Taison, who doesn't lack for energy, tracks back to win the ball and set in motion a break which ends with a Shevchuk cross which evades Teixeira.

62
More excellent defending from United as Costa and Adriano are hounded out on the edge of the box. Smalling and Vidic, the latter in particular, have been exceptional.

61
This might be United's best spell in the game as Giggs looks poised to come on. Welbeck and Carrick in particular do well to keep the ball before Vidic seeks out van Persie, who loses out. Shakhtar break and Fellaini is finally booked, presumably for repeated fouling, this time on Taison.

60
One hour gone and United lead by a goal to nil as rivals City fall two behind to Bayern. Eduardo is still warming up for Shakhtar as Giggs does the same for United.

59
Much, much better from United in midfield as they switch it left then right. Shakhtar do well to force them to go back to De Gea eventually.

58
Welbeck holds the ball up well and wins a throw as Costa tracks back to intercept a pass intended for van Persie.

57
Fellaini concedes another free-kick as Hubschman glides past him but again Shakhtar's execution in the final third is poor and De Gea clears.

56
Better from United as Smalling, Valencia and Welbeck combine nicely before van Persie loses out to Srna.

55
Shakhtar again attack down the left with Shevchuk, whose low cross almost finds Adriano. Again it's the faultless Vidic who steps in to clear.

54
De Gea is soon back on his feet and United win a free-kick on halfway as Cleverley goes down. Meanwhile Shakhtar continue to prepare a switch it seems.

53
Fellaini loses the ball cheaply to Hubschman and Shakhtar are again allowed to come forward, with Shevchuk fizzing in a low ball which De Gea does well to collect. He's injured in the carnage.

52
Nice exchange from Cleverley and Carrick but Shakhtar quickly win it back and Valencia eventually fouls Shevchuk.

51
Rakitskiy strikes it as well as you can really, but shooting from 40 yards isn't particularly wise and De Gea can stand and watch it sail wide.

50
Smalling concedes a cheap free-kick as Eduardo shapes as though he may be about to enter the fray. For now it's a set-piece from 40 yards out.

49
Nice ball this time from Srna and Costa leaves it for Teixeira, who is about to unleash a shot when Carrick steps in. Important interception from the United and England midfielder.

48
Vidic has been outstanding so far and steps in to deny Fernando on the edge of the box before Rafael hacks clear.

47
The free-kick comes to nothing as the second half follows the pattern set in the first, with Shakhtar in control of the ball but failing to penetrate.

46
We're back under way here and United win an early free-kick as Fellaini goes down on halfway.

Johnny says: 'Some people are so negative about United and Moyes. we are 1-0 up in a CL game and I think we are playing pretty well. How many times did Fergie field an unchanged side? And what did he win? Hmmmm. Good play from the Reds and well done Moyesy - results count and you are pleasing THIS man u fan at least!'

The latest odds from Sky Bet show that United are 1/2 favourites to win from here, with the draw 11/4 and Shakhtar 6/1. Among the price boosts is a 3-0 win at 16/1, Fellaini to score next at 18/1 and Shakhtar to win 2-1 at 14/1.

Antony says: 'I wasn't very optimistic when I saw the line up but having seen that first half the team hasn't look half as bad I thought, Fellaini still in my eyes isn't Man Utd quality, slow, lazy and is too clumsy with challenges due to his size.'

David is with us from Canada and says: 'Aam happy to see that things are going well in this game at least. Still can't help thinking how Utd. lack creative players in midfield. Ozil would have been the perfect buy, and it was a big mistake not getting him, we were NEVER going to get Fabregas, he has said that he would never play for Utd.'

Phil in Christchurch says: 'wow what a first half of football welbeck goal what a great goal just need one more and the game is over' while Stuart is less pleased, saying: 'This game only highlights how weak United are in Europe and will be knocked out in the later stages by technically better sides; Bayern, Real Madrid, Barca, Man City etc. I think we'll win tonight but we shouldn't get too excited about progressing to the last eight or even finishing in the top four in the premier league. Sad times.'

James says: 'I know Moyes is new but don't you think it's time he played a settled team instead of chopping and changing, united looked good defensively but could do with a bit more attacking options, happy overall though!'

Jonny writes: 'I think a better defensive performance away from home is something we need to see more often. Forget the scoring.. 3 points and a sterdy defence is what we need going in to the next game.'

A difficult hard to assess because Shakhtar could've had a penalty and have had much more of the ball, but United have defended excellently and took their one chance very well. A fascinating second half awaits, in the meantime I'll drop a few emails in so get yours to benjamin.coley@bskyb.com.

45+1
Good end to the half from Shakhtar but again their delivery is poor and United lead 1-0 at half-time. So far, so good.

45
Fellaini finds van Persie with a flick on but the flag goes up - correctly - for offside. United are seconds away from taking a lead into half-time.

44
Shevchuk finds space but once again it's a cross which fails to beat the nearest defender and United break, with Pyatov forced to rush out to beat Fellaini to a through-ball.

43
De Gea comes right to the edge of his box to collect the ball and to my eye his hands were outside of it when he did so, but the referee has a good view and allows play to continue.

42
Another example of that arrives as Vidic steps in to stop a ball from Costa, who was forced to try something speculative.

41
For all the criticism Moyes has taken, United are superbly organised in defence this evening. True, they've allowed their opponents a lot of possession, but they've also just about restricted them to shots from range and and wide areas.

40
Teixeira comes forward again and finds Costa, but the door is closed with even van Persie deep inside his own half to defend.

39
Shakhtar break swiftly and Costa's cross is blocked by Vidic before Carrick calmly clears. Teixeira then finds space and time on the edge of the box but his shot is weak and straight at De Gea.

38
A lesson in delivery from van Persie whose cross is superb and finds Smalling, who can't quite get enough on it.

37
Good stuff from van Persie as he springs to life down the right, beats Rakitskiy and wins United a corner which he'll take.

36
It's Costa's turn to fail to beat the near-post man - that's four or five good crossing opportunities wasted by Shakhtar - and Cleverley eventually clears.

35
Shevchuk is found by a long ball and goes down under Valencia's challenge. Not a lot in it but probably a free-kick and a good chance for the hosts to trouble De Gea.

34
Fellaini wins the ball in the air and United can finally enjoy a spell in control of the ball, before the Belgian is harshly adjudged to have fouled his marker Hubschman as he looked to play in Valencia.

33
Another excellent piece of tracking by Welbeck, who dispossesses Srna again, bursts past him and is brought down. Srna is fortunate to escape a booking there.

32
Great tracking back by Welbeck as Srna again gallops forward. Shakhtar are looking to expose United down that side but so far they've failed to capitalise on space generated.

31
A third of the game gone and Moyes will be delighted with the scoreline, if not all aspects of United's play. They've not been particularly efficient with the ball but have in the main defended their own area well.

30
Fellaini gets on the end of a clipped pass from Smalling but a poor first touch sees Shakhtar eventually win a throw. Fellaini then gives it away again but Cleverley comes to the rescue.

29
Another shocker from Srna. After a lung-busting run to the byline which was rewarded with a perfect pass from Costa, the Shakhtar skipper succeeds only in blasting the ball high over the United goal.

28
It's another poor delivery. Shakhtar often go for the near post but the ball still has to beat the first defender and none of those three deliveries did that.

27
Srna's ball is poor but goes out for a corner, which is also poor. He gets a third chance though and wins another corner.

26
Poor from Evra, who takes an age before attempting a pass that wasn't on and eventually brings down Srna for a Shakhtar free-kick. Danger from nothing here.

25
A long ball finds the head of Adriano but his flick-on runs into empty space and Vidic can clear. Shakhtar look at their most threatening when going at United's full-backs.

24
A brief period of calm as De Gea and Smalling exchange passes before Valencia goes down under Shevchuk's robust challenge for a United free-kick.

23
Neat interplay from United as van Persie finds Cleverley, who looks to be clipped 25 yards out. The referee - happy to let this flow - waves play on.

22
Fellaini shows his defensive quality to head the corner clear but it falls to Teixeira, whose shot flies over. There would've been controversy had that gone in as Carrick was certainly fouled.

21
Sloppy from Taison, whose attempt to find Costa is poor. Hubschman wins it back, though, and and Shakhtar win a corner when Shevchuk's cross deflects behind off Rafael.

20
Shakhtar are back on the attack and look lively on the flanks. For now, though, United hold firm with Vidic heading clear under pressure.

19
Credit to Welbeck there - he showed real instinct to sniff out a chance having seldom been involved so far.

18
GOAL! Welbeck (18)! Fellaini makes his presence felt in the box, spins and cuts back towards Welbeck. Rakitskiy looks to have matters in control but is off-balance and Welbeck pounces from close range.

17
This time van Persie spins his marker and finds Valencia, who cuts back to Cleverley. His cross is poor, however, and goes behind.

16
Cleverley does well to find Welbeck, who tries a give and go with Fellaini which doesn't quite come off and Shakhtar can clear.

15
Looking at the replay, Shakhtar should probably have had a penalty there. The hosts are right on top now and those in the crowd know it.

14
Costa shows great pace to dash towards the United area before finding Adriano, whose cut-back is good but isn't capitalised on by his colleagues. Shakhtar then win a corner and there's a penalty shout as Texeira goes down under Cleverley's challenge. There looked to be contact and the referee may have refused to give that purely due to the striker's theatrics.

13
Some tonic for suffering United fans as City are behind against Bayern. Here in the Ukraine, the hosts are coming into the game having been second best in the opening 10 minutes.

12
Evra reads the game perfectly to deny Teixeira a run through on goal but his block almost falls to Adriano and requires De Gea to race out and clear. Good game, this.

11
First signs of life from the hosts. Fernando shows lightning pace to get to a ball which looks like going out and crosses. Carrick steps in to intercept but wants too long and is dispossessed by Adriano, who passes to Srna. His cross is too deep and the danger passes.

10
Taison has been lively but Fellaini tracks back and tackles him to stop a Shakhtar break. United, not afraid to go long to van Persie, fire one through to Pyatov in the home goal.

9
Welbeck comes deep to link up the play and United enjoy a sustained spell of possession before van Persie finds space on the edge of the box and is found by Cleverley. It's a superb first touch and turn but the Dutch striker blasts over. Chance.

8
United are denied a free-kick after a marauding run from Rafael sees him go down on the edge of the Shakhtar box under a challenge from Taison. The visitors have the upper hand here.

7
Excellent defending from Kucher to prevent van Persie turning onto his left foot on the edge of the area. Fascinating battle developing there.

6
Fernando and Srna combine but Shakhtar have no joy down the right and United can begin the building process again.

5
It comes to nothing after a modest delivery by van Persie, but United are soon back on the ball and look a lot more compact in midfield. Fellaini concedes a cheap free-kick on halfway.

4
Corner for United as Fellaini wins the ball and passes to Valencia, whose through ball is cleared behind by Shevchuk.

3
Nice tidying up from Taison under pressure from van Persie and again that allows Shakhtar's defence to knock it from side to side.

2
Scrappy stuff early on with neither side finding time in midfield. Rakitskiy and Kucher have time to knock it around but the latter's long ball is headed clear by Vidic.

1
United get us under way dressed in all-white. Evra goes long to van Persie early but Kucher clears and Adriano briefly looks like latching onto the ball before De Gea collects.

1944
Right, it's time for some football. Apologies to anyone whose email didn't make it - I've been inundated and am thankful for that. There will be time for more at the interval.

1941
So, erm, it seems not many people are very happy with the team selection. At least Robin van Persie is back, eh? And United have a rare chance to see victory as a bonus it would seem.

Tahsin says: 'Someone please explain the logic of having Hernandez and Kagawa on the bench while Welbeck and Cleverly gets to play? What exactly do they offer at a time when United are struggling to break teams down? I'm all for giving Moyes time but he's making it really, really hard. Total lack of imagination and flair.'

John isn't pleased with the selection either. He writes: 'I am a die hard United fan but I am very shocked to see little pea and Nani on the bench both had a massive impact in recent games and their pace, awareness, ability, and goal scoring abilty would caused massive problems tonight.'

1937
Many happy returns in advance, Tom.

Tom says: 'It's my birthday tomorrow, and I'm hoping for an early present here from United. That said I'm not overly optimistic, we've been shocking recently and I'm scratching my head as to why Kagawa is so often overlooked, and Zaha hasn't been involved at all! 2-1 to Shakhtar tonight I reckon, I'd like to see Fellaini score.'

Arjun is next in line: 'People have been very quick to judge Moyes on the whole not playing Kagawa issue. Here's a player who hasn't performed at the same level as he did for Dortmund even under Sir Alex and hasn't really been the difference maker when played by Moyes. Welbeck, a United youth product, was preferred to Rooney last year against Real Madrid simply because of the amount he runs up and down, giving United an added line of defense against the counter attack Shakhtar are so famous for.'

Wahid says: 'Moyes has not got a clue what he is doing. Why has he always left kagawa on bench, he's one of best players in world and the games he's played he's played him out of position. Welbeck and Cleverly starting rather not watch game.'

Zlatan writes: 'No Kagawa in the starting line up! Why leave out one of the best creative midfielders in the squad out of the starting line up? Kagawa would have been ideal playing behind RVP instead of Wellbeck.'

Thomas writes: 'I have to say the exclusion of Wayne Rooney from the squad, and Shinji Kagawa being on the bench is both surprising and bemusing. I am backing Moyes to be a great manager for United, but some decisions so far have been hard to understand.'

1926
And just like that, news. Rooney received a kick in the shin in training yesterday and while David Moyes had hoped he'd be fit, it's swollen and Rooney can't play.

1925
We've no information as to why Rooney isn't in the squad just yet Martin, but it's surely fair to assume he's picked up a little knock. More when we get it.

Martin says: 'Very suprised Rooney is not even in the squad you got any info why that is? Injury? A team struggling at the minute, big Reds fan but testing times and now our best player out it's going to be struggle tonight. I say draw would be good result for us.'

1922
I would agree with most of that, Chris, and thanks for joining us. The one thing I'd point out though is that victory for Shakhtar wouldn't be a shock, which in itself highlights the problems United are faced with.

Chris writes: 'I am a die-hard Red Devils fan, however, our performances have been abysmal of late. I wouldn't be surprised if that continued tonight as Donetsk are a team who love to hit their opponents on the counter attack, and if United don't deal with their attacking capabilities properly, there could be a shock on the cards tonight, which would just about show how poor United have performed so far this season.'

1919
For what it's worth, I have little idea what's going to happen here. United's defence has looked porous so I'd expect both teams to find the net, but that's hardly enlightening information. There's some temptation to back United in the hope that I among others have been guilty of exaggerating their weakness but I'm worried that isn't the case.

1917
So, what do we make of the teams, the prices, the importance of the game? Thoughts welcome at benjamin.coley@bskyb.com.

1915
Man Utd: De Gea, Rafael Da Silva, Smalling, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Fellaini, Cleverley, Welbeck, van Persie. Subs: Lindegaard, Jones, Giggs, Hernandez, Nani, Young, Kagawa.

1914
Shakhtar Donetsk: Pyatov, Srna, Kucher, Rakitskiy, Shevchuk, Fernando, Hubschman, Taison, Alex Teixeira, Douglas Costa, Luiz Adriano. Subs: Kanibolotskiy, Stepanenko, Bernard, Eduardo, Ferreyra, Kryvtsov, Ilsinho.

1910
Teams are on the way but the news is United have made no fewer than nine changes to the side which lost to West Brom and among them the most striking is the news that Wayne Rooney is not in the squad.

Our friends at Sky Bet make Shakhtar 7/5 favourites, with the draw 12/5 and United available at 2/1. Among their price boosts are Robin van Persie to score first at 11/2 or a Shakhtar 2-0 win at 14/1.

1905
United may see this as a welcome distraction from the struggles found in the Premier League, and they certainly produced a performance of fluency when beating Bayer Leverkusen 4-2. For Shakhtar, it's a chance to exploit a side who are surely short on confidence.

1900
Hello and welcome along to coverage of Shakhtar v Manchester United. Both sides got off to a perfect start with opening wins to sit second and first respectively in Group A and a fascinating encounter is in store.
