The Sunderland player had not netted since grabbing a goal for his club against Chelsea in December, but he made a timely return to scoring form for his country in Jacksonville.

Altidore tapped in right-back Fabian Johnson's cross for the US team's opener in the 31st minute, before showing his confidence was up by slaloming into a shooting position and rattling in a fierce shot for his second goal after 68 minutes.

Victor Moses replied with an 86th-minute penalty for Nigeria, beating Tim Howard from the spot to deny the goalkeeper a clean sheet on his 100th appearance for the United States.
