Boro collected their first win of the season at Charlton last weekend and Mowbray believes his new-look side have what it takes.

"We have had a good pre-season, everybody is just about fit and we have got every confidence that the team can win games," he told the Evening Gazette.

"We do need some more players, but I'd like to think we can be up there if we get them. You would have to say QPR are going to be in the top six with the squad they have got and the money they are spending.

"Wigan are a very, very talented team and if Reading do what they do I think they will be a handful and a force as well."

He added: "I think those three will probably be stronger than the three that came down last year. We will hopefully be in the top half of the table competing with the relegated teams, with Forest, with Leicester, with Watford, and Blackburn."
