The 25-year-old utility man has been named in the Australia squad for next Saturday's friendly against Brazil in Brasilia having missed out on selection for the World Cup qualifiers against Japan, Jordan and Iraq in June.

Mowbray told the club's official website: "I'm delighted for Rhys.

"He needed a good pre-season under his belt after missing five months of last season through injury and it's good to see his performance levels back up where we know they can be."

Williams, a central defender by trade, has played every minute of Boro's five games to date this season to confirm his return to fitness.
