Zulte Waregem are leading the chase for Haroun, who also has interest from English clubs in the Championship.

But Haroun senior feels a return to Belgium would be the best option for his son.

"There are a few English Championship teams showing interest in my son, but Zulte Waregem is a very good option," Mahamat Haroun told Het Laatste Nieuws.

"He wants to play in the Belgian top six and they would be an ideal team.

"My son is still in England, but he might be available soon, so he could join the team on their winter training camp in Spain."

The 28-year-old international joined Boro in 2011 from Germinal Beerschot and became a popular figure with the fans.

But he has slipped to being more of a fringe player in the past 12 months and is yet to make a league appearance this term.
